  • Must maintain or obtain the appropriate U.S. Government clearance and customer screening requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Use appropriate artificial intelligence tools and practices throughout the software development lifecycle, review AI-generated changes, and apply appropriate tooling and processes.
  • Use debugging, tests, tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods to verify assumptions proactively; conduct incident retrospectives, identify root causes, implement repairs, and prevent recurrence.
  • Apply least-access principles and use logging, telemetry, and other mechanisms to investigate issues while protecting privacy and security.
  • Review product feature and test code for team standards, test coverage, quality, security risks, compliance, and best practices; provide code-review insight and feedback to develop engineers' skills.
  • Create and implement reusable, extensible, and maintainable code for products, services, or features; escalate blockers and contribute to strategies for addressing them.

  • Apply secure design and development practices, validate security invariants, and build scalable software that meets performance and security requirements.
  • Identify engineering tool gaps, reuse appropriate open-source or internal code, and identify or create tools that support product development.
  • Apply security best practices, establish security code invariants, adopt security review practices, contribute security deployment gates and scanners, and implement monitoring to detect violations.
  • Work with security partners on security promises, threat models, premortems, monitoring, breach drills, incident response, and AI safety for production systems.
  • Follow security, privacy, safety, accessibility, compliance, and regulatory processes and maintain evidence of compliance.
  • Work with partner teams to establish end-to-end testing, live-site coverage, scalability, performance, and escalation pathways before launch.
  • Keep engineering skills current and conduct learning sessions on relevant engineering design principles.
  • Review work items and execute project and release plans; help break down work and estimate effort; escalate schedule risks; account for security, privacy, compliance, disaster recovery, efficient operation, and rollback planning.
  • Deploy features safely to customers, monitor dependency status, deploy secure versions, identify when rollback is needed, and contribute to production-like testing infrastructure.
  • Run experiments using internal experimentation infrastructure, feature flags, and flighting; work with internal partners on success and guardrail metrics.
  • Maintain live-site services and respond on-call to incidents using security best practices and minimum required permissions; mitigate issues, escalate appropriately, and improve troubleshooting guides, tests, telemetry, and support documentation.

  • Work with internal stakeholders to understand customer and user requirements, incorporate customer insights into designs and fixes, evaluate quantitative and qualitative indicators of value, and advocate for customer security and privacy needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 3 years of technical engineering experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 5 years of technical engineering experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience building and operating services on Microsoft Azure and other cloud platforms.

Xbox's new pay-as-you-go cloud gaming, from $4 for 10 hours, angers gamers over rising costs

Xbox has launched Cloud Playtime, a pay-as-you-go option that lets Game Pass subscribers buy extra cloud gaming hours once they hit their cap. Ten extra monthly hours cost $4, 25 hours cost $8, and 50 hours cost $12. Game Pass subscribers already pay between $10 and $23 a month for five to 15 hours of cloud gaming. Xbox introduced the cap in September; the service had been unlimited when it launched in 2020 as a cheaper alternative to buying games. Some gamers have criticised the change. YouTuber Yong Yea said the extra fees undermine cloud gaming's affordability argument. The move comes as Xbox cut 20% of its workforce, about 3,200 roles, amid slumping revenue from falling hardware sales and Game Pass subscription losses.

Meta falls 7% as $34.9B capex tops cash flow; investors punish AI spending cuts and hikes

Meta shares fell 7% on October 22 even though third-quarter sales rose 26% and beat estimates. Capital expenditure of $34.9 billion topped operating cash flow as AI spending outran the company's cash generation. MetLife's Drew Matus says investors punish both capex cuts and hikes. "I don't actually really know what people want from these people," he said. Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Intel on Thursday. The four make up about 15% of the Nasdaq 100, which has fallen roughly 7% this month. The Federal Reserve decides on rates Wednesday afternoon, hours before Microsoft and Alphabet report. Matus expects it to skip a move and revisit policy in December.

Amazon and Microsoft's $395B AI spending is already paying off through cloud growth

AI spending could pass $1.3 trillion in 2027, according to S&P Global, and investors doubt much of it will pay off. Amazon and Microsoft are already seeing returns on their cloud and AI investments. Amazon raised its capital expenditures to $220 billion this year, mostly for AI. Its cloud arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), holds 28% of the market, per Synergy Research Group, and has an annualized revenue run rate of $169 billion. AWS posted $16.6 billion in operating income, a margin above 39%. Microsoft is spending $175 billion. Its Azure cloud service holds 21% of the market, with an annualized run rate of $100 billion, up 41% year on year. Management says demand exceeds available capacity. The author favours Microsoft, citing more than 30 million paid Copilot seats, up 50% in several months.

Meta, Barclays, Block cut thousands of jobs as firms shift spending to AI

Companies are cutting jobs and shifting money from staff to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as the cost of meeting booming AI demand reshapes budgets. Meta will lay off about 8,000 workers, or 10% of its workforce, and leave about 6,000 jobs unfilled. It expects 2026 expenses to reach as much as $169 billion, driven by infrastructure and AI talent. Block is cutting more than 4,000 of its 10,000-plus employees; its shares are up 19% this year. Kroger will lay off 3,000 corporate staff over three years, and Barclays plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 5% of its workforce. Snap is eliminating about 16% of staff, or 1,000 jobs. Coinbase is cutting about 14%, and Microsoft is offering buyouts to about 8,750 US employees.
