  • Experience taking an organization through rapid early scaling by joining when the team was small and building recruiting functions and processes from scratch.

  • Experience in mission-driven organizations and a record of hiring for first-of-their-kind roles.
  • Experience advising founders on talent strategy, organizational design, and compensation.
  • Deep interest in the science and in the people and institutions shaping vector control and crop protection.
Responsibilities
  • Own full-cycle recruiting for every open role across formulation and computational chemistry, behavioral assay science, machine learning and computer vision, lab network operations, and global health and regulatory, including scoping, sourcing, interviewing, offer design, and closing.
  • Turn ambiguous mandates from the founder and technical leads into clear role definitions, calibrated hiring bars, and structured interview loops, including scorecards, debriefs, and calibration.
  • Build top-of-funnel talent maps and warm pipelines across entomology, chemistry, machine learning, and vector-control research, and identify relevant labs, companies, and funders.
  • Run searches outside standard processes for senior researchers and operators who are not actively looking, using discretion, market intelligence, and tailored approaches.
  • Close exceptional candidates through substantive, relationship-based conversations that address the work and its trade-offs honestly.
  • Establish recruiting infrastructure, including applicant tracking, pipeline reporting, employer presence, and a candidate experience suited to the work.
  • Own hiring-related people foundations, including leveling, offer frameworks, and a consistent hiring bar across science, engineering, and operations.
  • Hire and lead recruiters if and when the team needs them.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience spanning recruiting and people operations, including leveling, compensation design, and onboarding, so the hiring system and employee experience develop together.
  • Experience in mission-driven organizations and a record of hiring for first-of-their-kind roles.

What believers are saying

  • Monarch's August 2026 website says it is developing a product that works.
  • Four open R&D roles in February 2026 show active experimentation and team building.
  • Lead Entomologist hiring cited machine-learning-predicted compounds, validating the core discovery approach.

What critics are saying

  • No public field trials, customer contracts, or revenue prove the repellent works commercially.
  • Hiring remains research-heavy in Alameda and Oakland, signaling product risk and long development timelines.
  • If efficacy misses broad-spectrum insects, Monarch becomes another biotech platform with no defensible market.

What makes Monarch unique

  • Monarch builds a spatial repellent, not a conventional insecticide, targeting crop protection.
  • Its data engine combines genomics, behavioral assays, and computational chemistry for compound discovery.
  • Open roles in formulation chemistry and computational entomology show a deep wet-lab plus ML moat.
