Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED and completion of a two-year echocardiography training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or a cardiovascular technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs are required.
  • Registration by a national certification organization such as the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Credentialing International is required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
  • The role requires effective communication and the ability to transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication behaviors.
  • The role requires accuracy and attention to detail when processing information.
  • The role requires knowledge of heart functions and activities, detection of arrhythmias, recognition of emergency cardiac conditions, and assistance with emergency responses.
  • The role requires knowledge of cardiac testing equipment and protocols used to examine heart function and anatomy.
  • The role requires knowledge of echocardiography principles and the ability to perform echocardiograms and other cardiac ultrasound procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Escort patients from the waiting area to the examination room, review written history questionnaires, and explain the nature of tests.
  • Perform two-dimensional, M-mode, and color Doppler echocardiograms according to department policy, physician orders, and standards of care.
  • Perform transesophageal echocardiograms on non-operative and intra-operative patients according to department policy, physician orders, and standards of care.
  • Perform dobutamine stress echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms according to department policy, physician orders, and standards of care.
  • Log pertinent patient and test data for accurate hospital and departmental billing and record keeping.
  • Monitor the performance and repair of clinical equipment to maintain testing quality and staff and customer safety.
  • Maintain images in the electronic health record.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize clinical equipment to protect staff and customers from pathogens.
  • Participate in on-call coverage according to department policy and perform other assigned duties.
