Requirements
- A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- A nurse practitioner must hold national certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- A physician assistant must have a Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree as a Physician Assistant.
- A physician assistant must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- A physician assistant must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- The position requires the physical ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The position requires the ability to work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- The position requires the ability to work closely with others and work protracted or irregular hours.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and their families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds and pre-treatment or pre-procedure evaluations in the infusion center, participate in ambulatory clinics, and participate in inpatient patient care.
- Complete integrated patient assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hematology/oncology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by ordering and coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care for hematology/oncology patients, including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of the individual's education and certification.
- Participate in physician rounds when applicable.
- Identify unstable or complex hematology/oncology care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions in infusion center, clinic, and hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate hematology/oncology patients and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Maintain and update clinical knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hematology/oncology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation standards.

- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in hematology/oncology practice that improve patient outcomes.

- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of delivering care to hematology/oncology patients and families in infusion, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUH/University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan.
- Apply information from performance-improvement activities and change practice as necessary to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret hematology/oncology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Oversee and provide comprehensive and individualized care for patients evaluated and managed in the infusion center within the scope of practice.
- Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves the center.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in hematology/oncology, acute care, or internal medicine is preferred.
- OCN or AOCN certification is preferred.
- A master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
