About the company

CME Group runs the world’s leading derivatives marketplace, offering futures and options across major asset classes on four exchanges (CME, CBOT, NYMEX, COMEX). Its services include trading platforms, clearing and settlement, and market data, serving individual traders, institutions, and commercial entities. How it works: traders buy and sell standardized contracts (futures and options) on its platforms; the trades are cleared through a central clearinghouse, which handles margining, settlement, and risk management, providing price discovery and transfer of risk. How it differs: CME Group combines a broad range of benchmark products with integrated services (trading, clearing, market data) across multiple exchanges, giving wide instrument access, global reach, and a unified risk-management framework. Goal: to provide a reliable, efficient system for price discovery, hedging, speculating, and managing risk in global derivatives markets.

CME Group Q3 revenue rises 13% to $1.7B as record market data hits $243M

CME Group reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.7 billion, up 13% year over year, on its earnings call on October 21, 2026. Market data revenue hit a quarterly record of $243 million, extending growth to 34 consecutive quarters. Chairman and chief executive officer Terry Duffy said the exchange operator saved customers an average of more than $100 billion a day in margin through record capital efficiency. It also expanded collateral offsets across fixed income, equity indexes, and interest rate swaps. Duffy said the company will not weaken core protections to launch products faster. Chief financial officer Lynne Fitzpatrick said fourth-quarter volume is running 17% above last year's record, and year-to-date volume is 12% ahead.

Exchanges plan AI compute futures market to hedge volatility in processing power

A futures market for AI compute — the processing capacity needed to train and run AI models — is in development, treating it like commodities such as oil or grain. CME Group announced plans to launch two compute futures contracts on 5 October, pending regulatory approval. Each contract would represent a month's rent for an Nvidia H100 or Blackwell B200 chip. The exchange is working with Silicon Data, which publishes indices tracking compute pricing. New York-based OneChronos is also developing a compute futures marketplace, awaiting federal regulatory approval. CEO Kelly Littlepage expects it to be operational this year. The challenge is that compute isn't truly a commodity — it's not fungible, storable, or transportable. OneChronos is using combinatorial auctions to address this issue.
