HKEX introduces S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index in collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) today announced the launch of the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, a new co-branded index developed in collaboration with leading index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI). The index is designed to measure the performance of leading US-listed companies and largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong. As Hong Kong's equity market continues to grow and evolve, technology and innovation-driven companies are playing an increasingly important role. Meanwhile, investors are looking across markets for broader opportunities and diversification, driving demand for more flexible ways to access global markets. Against this backdrop, the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index brings together two complementary market exposures within a single benchmark. It combines the growth potential of Hong Kong's technology and innovation companies with the scale and diversity of the US large-cap market, offering investors broader exposure across geographies, sectors and sources of growth. The index allocates approximately 60 per cent to the HKEX Tech 100 Index and 40 per cent to the S&P 500 and rebalances quarterly. Gregory Yu, HKEX Head of Markets, said: "Innovation is reshaping how companies drive growth and how investors access opportunities. We are delighted to deepen our collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices through this new index, which combines Hong Kong's vibrant technology and innovation ecosystem with the breadth of the US large-cap market. By bringing these complementary exposures together in a single benchmark, we are creating new pathways for investors to access opportunities across markets. At HKEX, we are committed to building out our index suite and developing innovative solutions that support the long-term growth and vibrancy of our markets." Robert Ross, Chief Commercial Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said: "As investors increasingly look across markets to capture growth opportunities, there is growing demand for benchmarks that bring together complementary exposures in new ways. We are delighted to collaborate with HKEX to develop the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, combining Hong Kong's dynamic technology sector with leading US large-cap companies in a single, transparent benchmark. The index demonstrates how benchmark innovation can connect distinct market opportunities through a consistent, rules-based framework." The S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, launched on 30 September 2026, is designed to support the eligibility of ETFs tracking it for potential inclusion in Southbound Stock Connect. The index will also facilitate portfolio diversification and cross-market capital flows by providing exposure to both the US and Hong Kong equity markets through a single benchmark. The HKEX Tech 100 Index, launched in December 2025, is designed to measure the performance of 100 of the largest Hong Kong-listed companies with high exposure to the six technology themes: artificial intelligence, biotech and pharmaceutical, electric vehicles and smart driving, information technology, internet and robotics. The S&P 500 is widely regarded as the best single gauge of large-cap US equities. The index includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 85 per cent of available US market capitalization. As of the end of 2025, approximately US$23 trillion was indexed or benchmarked to the S&P 500, including roughly US$16 trillion in passively managed assets.
SFC's Julia Leung maps next phase of Hong Kong liquidity reforms. Brokers, clearing members and listed issuers will see changes to margin, settlement and board lots as the SFC seeks to build on recent liquidity gains. Get the hottest Fintech Hong Kong News once a month in your Inbox Julia Leung, chief executive of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), has set out Hong Kong's next steps to deepen market liquidity. At an ASIFMA conference, she said average daily stock turnover has passed HK$270 billion so far this year. That is 160% higher than in 2023. Leung said that when friction is removed at the right points, liquidity tends to follow. They raised the rebate on cash collateral and halved the fees on non-cash collateral. Since October 2025, the rebate rate on Hong Kong dollar cash has risen 45% in the derivatives market. In the cash market, it is up eightfold. The next major step is cross-market margining, so firms can offset margin across HKEX's clearing houses. Smaller minimum spreads have cut bid-ask spreads by 38% for the first 300 stocks. HKEX will soon set a timeline for T+1 settlement. From November, board lot reform will cover all listed firms. Work is under way on longer trading hours, starting with derivatives. HKEX and the HKMA are testing e-HKD for after-hours margin payments. Turnover in exchange-traded products has grown 3.6 times since 2023. These products make up nearly a fifth of Main Board trades. Leung tied this growth to ETF Connect, which covers 31 ETFs. She also cited new products such as virtual asset spot ETFs. Leung said Hong Kong's progress shows that liquidity is built by design rather than left to chance, with further work still ahead.
