About the Company

Shimano

Designs bicycle components and drivetrain systems

Shimano designs and makes bicycle components and systems. It started with the bicycle freewheel and grew into a full line of drivetrain components—derailleurs, internal gear hubs, cranksets, brakes, and wheels—that are designed to work together as integrated groupsets. These parts are manufactured and sold to bike brands and retailers rather than producing complete bicycles, and Shimano also operates overseas manufacturing plants and supports professional cycling with performance gear like the Dura-Ace and Deore XT lines. The company distinguishes itself by focusing on high-quality, compatible component systems rather than selling finished bikes, enabling riders to mix and customize parts from a single supplier. Shimano’s goal is to lead the cycling world in drivetrain innovation and reliability, helping riders achieve smoother shifting, better pedaling efficiency, and a high-performance cycling experience.
