Requirements
  • Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  • Hold current appropriate state licensure and comply with applicable state statutory and regulatory requirements concerning Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Hold current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications.
  • Be currently certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Be insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by the institution or state.
  • Have 8–12 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Be able to perform clinically as a nurse anesthetist in a facility setting on a regular basis.
  • Be able to operate, use, and interpret data from a wide variety of equipment to provide anesthesia care and necessary perioperative or operating-room care that supports patient safety and wellbeing while under the CRNA’s direct care.
  • Have effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with clinical staff and other disciplines.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations served.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan and assess data relevant to population-specific and age-specific patient needs.
  • Know infection prevention and control techniques.
  • Be able to maintain confidential records.
  • Be able to implement and adhere to facility policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and document pre-anesthesia assessments and patient evaluations.
  • Review, request, and order laboratory or diagnostic studies as permitted by state law.
  • Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
  • Select, obtain, order, and administer pre-anesthetic medication or treatment.
  • Develop and implement an anesthesia care plan.
  • Select, obtain, prepare, and use equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for sedation, anesthesia, and pain management; perform safety checks as needed.
  • Select, order, obtain, and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant and accessory drugs, and fluids needed to provide anesthesia services.
  • Document a time-based record of events during peri-anesthetic care.
  • Perform all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation.
  • Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
  • Initiate and administer post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system.
  • Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post-anesthesia period.
  • Evaluate the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery and take appropriate corrective action after anesthesia.
  • Provide post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care.
  • Discharge patients from the post-anesthesia care unit.
  • Implement acute and chronic pain management modalities.
  • Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining patient disposition, including providing airway management and emergency administration.
  • Place and manage regional anesthetic techniques as delineated by clinical or special privileges.
  • Insert and manage peripheral, arterial, pulmonary, or central venous lines and catheters.
  • Provide patient and caregiver education.
  • Consult with respiratory care providers and implement respiratory and ventilator care when appropriate.
  • Support patient safety in job functions and by participating in facility, department, or unit patient-safety initiatives; correct observed risks, report adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority, identify potential risks in processes, procedures, or devices and communicate them to those in charge, and use an interdisciplinary approach including consultation or referral to another clinician as appropriate.
  • Perform advanced and interventional pain management using drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted pain-relief modalities, with or without fluoroscopic guidance.
  • Utilize ultrasound and fluoroscopy as appropriate.
  • Participate in center quality meetings, medical executive meetings, and other management meetings upon request from the Medical Director.
  • Review and comply with the Code of Business Conduct, applicable company policies and procedures, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Five years of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist experience is preferred.
