A Bloomberg report on August 21 revealed that Centrus Energy Corp. (NYSE:LEU) sees the US military as a key market for its enriched uranium. The company's CEO, Amir Vexler, stated that he expects a US government contract to supply nuclear fuel for defense to be finalized as early as this year, marking a significant growth opportunity. According to Mr. Vexler, the contract could include supplying nuclear fuel for vessels of the US Navy, or the small modular reactors (SMRs) that the military plans to deploy at its bases. Moreover, the supply could also support production of tritium, a key component in nuclear weapons, although the CEO emphasized that the DoE's National Nuclear Security Administration will determine its end uses. Centrus Energy has a significant competitive edge in the national security market due to restrictions on using foreign-sourced uranium for US military applications. The latest move builds on several other steps that the Maryland-based firm has taken over the last year. Earlier in January, the company received a $900 million task order from the DoE to support commercial-scale production capacity for LEU and HALEU. Additionally, it has already produced nearly 2 metric tons of HALEU UF6 for the government under its current operations contract. A key player in america's nuclear fuel push: With Washington actively reducing reliance on imported uranium and bolstering domestic production and enrichment capacity, an agreement with the US military could transform Centrus Energy into a key strategic component of the American nuclear fuel supply chain. The company is already well-positioned for this opportunity, as its enrichment technology is already transitioning from demonstration to commercial-scale production. It is currently building a multi-billion-dollar enrichment facility in Ohio, with commercial production expected in 2029. Another positive for Centrus is that it is not entirely reliant on government demand for its growth. The company continues to expand its commercial customer base and has already signed or advanced HALEU supply agreements with companies including Oklo and X-energy. It ended the second quarter with a backlog of $4.5 billion, extending through 2040. The military opportunity is still far from guaranteed: Investors should stay mindful that while the aforementioned military opportunity represents a significant revenue stream, it is not yet secured and remains limited to management's comments for now. Moreover, there is also a real execution risk. Centrus Energy is currently transitioning from demonstration-scale enrichment to a full-scale commercial buildout, and its first new commercial capacity isn't expected to come online before 2029. It also needs to be mentioned that Centrus Energy is not the only company that the US government is betting on to rebuild domestic enrichment capacity. While the firm has an important first-mover advantage, the emergence of other suppliers, like General Matter and Orano, means that Centrus will have to eventually compete to capture the entire growth in military and commercial demand. Conclusion: Centrus Energy's potential entry into the multi-billion dollar military market represents a major long-term growth catalyst, particularly because it builds on the company's already existing relationship with the US government. The opportunity could help the company diversify its customer base while helping underpin demand for its planned enrichment capacity. However, investors should not equate a potential opportunity with secured revenue, as the company still needs to materialize the military demand through binding contracts. Moreover, it must also navigate substantial risks associated with execution and intensifying competition. Market sentiment: Centrus Energy Corp. By ExchangeMonitor The head of the Department of Energy's Hanford Field Office told a federal advisory committee last week that the potential annexation of several hundred acres by the city of Richland, Wash., would not slow nuclear cleanup at the former plutonium production site. "Absolutely not," DOE Hanford Field Office Manager Ray Geimer said in response to a question during the Aug. 12 meeting of the Hanford Advisory Board. "Not in any way, shape, or form. Annexation does not change or affect ownership, or responsibility, or requirements to work, and nor does it change anything that we would intend to do about it at any of those sites out there." On Aug. 2, the Tri-City Herald reported that DOE is asking the city of Richland to annex hundreds of acres of land near the city's northern border, including the highly-contaminated 324 Building. Geimer noted that nuclear company General Matter has proposed using an old building in the 400 area. General Matter and DOE's Office of Environmental Management agreed to team up in February for the company to use Hanford's Fuels and Materials Examination Facility to support a nuclear fuel facility. General Matter, a nuclear fuel startup company, also has plans to build a uranium enrichment facility at DOE's Paducah Site in Kentucky. "You know, it's in the [Richland] city's interest to start planning ahead to take over those areas, moving north of the city," Geimer said. Geimer continued, "And this is probably just the first of several annexations you'll see going on into the future, as the city grows its revenue base, its tax base, and then at the same time provides the kind of you know fire and emergency services and other city services that are needed in order to support those kinds of industrial developments."

Paducah site receives $100 billion investment to add data center campus. The U.S. Department of Energy announced July 29 it would use more than $100 billion in privately-funded investments to redevelop portions of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in West Paducah into a data center campus. The project is part of a partnership between the DOE and Brookfield, NextEra Energy, Big Rivers Electric Corporation, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative and Paducah Power System. The redevelopment, which will also be coupled with other "new affordable energy infrastructure," is expected to create roughly 8,000 temporary construction jobs and 600 permanent jobs, DOE officials confirmed. The West Paducah site was built in 1952 to produce enriched uranium to fuel the U.S. nuclear weapons program, but later came to support commercial power plants before its closure in 2013. The DOE now owns the site and is overseeing its environmental cleanup activities. Among the several companies selected for roles in the project, the DOE chose Brookfield to develop and operate the data center campus, while NextEra Energy will construct and own the energy infrastructure that will power the site, pending Kentucky Public Service Commission approval. In line with President Donald Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge, DOE officials said the project's generation and storage capacity would exceed the campus' needs, allowing excess electricity to be transferred to the regional grid and reduce energy costs for residents and businesses. "Thanks to President Trump, the U.S. government is leveraging its assets - like our federal lands - to add power generation, create jobs and ensure the United States wins the AI race," U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said in a statement. "The President's Ratepayer Protection Pledge ensures America can build the energy infrastructure needed to power the AI revolution while lowering electricity costs for American families and businesses. By transforming former DOE sites into engines of innovation and economic growth, we can revitalize communities with increased tax revenue and thousands of jobs, while also strengthening America's energy security." The project also falls within the DOE's American Energy Hubs initiative, which pushes to transform former DOE sites into "engines of affordable energy production, advanced manufacturing, technological innovation and economic growth," according to a release. Within the last year, developers have hinted at their renewed interest in the Paducah site as a spot where uranium enrichment facilities, nuclear power plants and data centers could converge. In March, Global Laser Enrichment, the "exclusive worldwide licensee" of the laser technology for uranium enrichment, invested $1.76 billion in the site and, months beforehand, General Matter announced a $1.5 billion uranium enrichment project for the same area. The decision also comes at the heels of a slew of protests in Louisville following conversations about data center development. Jefferson County's first hyperscale data center is set to be built in southwest Louisville at 6001 Camp Ground Road, with the initial phase expected to begin in late 2026. The Louisville Metro Planning Commission voted March 5 to approve a revised plan to allow Louisville-based Poe Companies and Virginia-based PowerHouse Data Centers to move ahead with development. The DOE said the Paducah site is "uniquely positioned" to support AI infrastructure and private investment while still allowing for the site to continue its long-term redevelopment and environmental cleanup. "We are intently focused on finding ways to put federal land back to productive use for the American people," DOE Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management Tim Walsh added in a release. U.S. Congressman and Republican Senate candidate Andy Barr called the investment in a new data center "historic." "I'm grateful to Secretary Wright for his leadership and partnership in securing a long-term commitment from the federal government to back this project. After speaking with local and state officials who were strongly supportive of this investment, I personally advocated with the Secretary to help make the project happen," Barr said. "Together with our private sector partners, this investment will create jobs, strengthen our energy security, and deliver lasting economic growth for Paducah and the Commonwealth for decades to come." General Matter, co-founded by Scott Nolan, has secured $900 million from the US Department of Energy to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) domestically. The funding aims to reduce American reliance on Russia and China, currently the only countries manufacturing HALEU commercially. HALEU is essential fuel for next-generation advanced reactors, including small modular reactors. General Matter will build a commercial enrichment facility in Paducah, Kentucky, on the site of a former gaseous diffusion plant.
