Requirements
  • Documented experience necessary to obtain the state license.
  • Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • State of Tennessee license as a registered respiratory therapist with arterial blood gas endorsement.
  • A current work permit acceptable under state regulations, when applicable.
  • New registry-eligible graduates must pass the National Board for Respiratory Care Registered Respiratory Therapist examination and obtain the credential within one year or before the work permit expires.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
  • Provide care to patients with respiratory insufficiency and related complications as part of the direct patient care team.
  • Serve as a respiratory care resource and specialist to patients, caregivers, and physicians.
  • Exercise clinical judgment under the order of a licensed physician when required.
  • Demonstrate respiratory care competency in critical and clinical skills annually.
  • Perform all aspects of respiratory therapy, including age-specific and related patient care, safely and competently.
  • Respond to emergencies according to department standards, policies, procedures, and protocols, including assuming a leadership role during emergencies.
  • Assess, identify, and treat patient health conditions according to organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Make safe, effective, and competent decisions regarding individual patient care and exercise sound judgment.
  • Communicate appropriately with nursing personnel, physicians, and other hospital staff.
  • Demonstrate competency in mechanical ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure, and bilevel positive airway pressure, including current ventilation modes, indications, and necessary calculations.
  • Perform and analyze arterial blood gases according to department policy and procedure, including quality control, troubleshooting, and quality assurance.
  • Perform assigned tasks and use equipment skillfully and accurately.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities, including suggesting unit or organizational improvements, collecting data, and analyzing data as appropriate.
  • Complete accurate, timely, and legible documentation and charges, including patient assessments, reassessments, education, goals, response to therapy, and other medical-record requirements.
  • Complete required quality-control procedures and documentation for regulatory agencies, the medical center, and the department.
  • Maintain respiratory equipment in clean, functioning order and manage the location and inventory of routinely used equipment.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete annual education assignments; work toward goals and objectives; and participate in quality-improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Assist with orientation and training of newly hired respiratory employees and precept respiratory students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Each of Covenant Health's nine acute-care hospitals in East Tennessee has earned an 'A' hospital safety grade for Fall 2024 from The Leapfrog Group, marking the second consecutive semester all facilities achieved this top rating. The Leapfrog Group collects and reports data related to safety, quality, and other aspects of hospitals' performance. Twice a year, Leapfrog assigns safety grades based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
