About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

What believers are saying

  • R2 is lifting sales: deliveries hit a record 19,248 in the September 2026 quarter, up 46% from a year earlier.
  • Uber backs Rivian's self-driving push: it pledged up to $1.25 billion in March 2026 and will buy 10,000 R2 robotaxis.
  • Room to grow: Rivian's $5 billion Georgia factory, set to start building cars in 2028, plans 7,500 permanent jobs.

What critics are saying

  • Losses still run deep: Rivian lost $837 million from April to June 2026, and its car sales lost money.
  • Layoffs keep coming: Rivian cut about 600 jobs in October 2025 and hundreds in June 2026, mostly sales and service.
  • Stock grants have shrunk: Rivian shares fell 27% from January to October 2026, versus Tesla's 17% drop.

What makes Rivian unique

  • Volkswagen buys its tech: joint-venture work for VW, Rivian's largest owner, brought in $308 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Amazon is its anchor customer: it ordered 100,000 custom Rivian delivery vans, and over 40,000 ran its routes by mid-2026.
  • Unlike Tesla, Rivian adds lidar: in December 2025 it unveiled its own RAP1 self-driving chip and laser sensors for R2.

Rivian shares rose more than 6% Friday to close at $12.16, after the electric-vehicle maker reported third-quarter revenue of $2.15 billion, up 38% from last year. Vehicle deliveries rose 46%, driven by the new R2, which launched in June. The automotive gross loss narrowed to $80 million from $130 million a year earlier. Chief executive RJ Scaringe said Rivian is targeting positive automotive gross profit by the end of 2026. Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles and raised the low end of its full-year delivery guidance to 67,000 from 65,000. The R2 currently sells for $57,990. An R2 Premium at around $54,000 is due in late 2026, followed by an R2 Standard at $44,990 in 2027.

Rivian gives interim CFO Derek Mulvey $1.4M stock award as deliveries jump 46%

Rivian has named Derek Mulvey, 36, interim chief financial officer, effective Friday. He succeeds Claire McDonough, who leaves after nearly six years to join GE Vernova on January 1. Third-quarter deliveries rose 46% year over year, driven by the R2. Jefferies upgrades Rivian to buy, sees 45% upside as R2 fills gap between Tesla and Ford

Jefferies upgraded Rivian to "Buy" from "Hold" and kept its $17 price target, implying about 45% upside. Analyst Philippe Houchois sees the R2 electric SUV filling a "relatively unique position and product void" in the $45,000-$55,000 range, between Tesla and Ford's upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle model. Rivian shares rose 5.6% on Friday. They have fallen about 30% in three months, from a July high of $20.2 to below $12. On Thursday, Rivian reported third-quarter revenue up 38% to $2.16 billion, with an adjusted loss of $0.48 per share. It raised its 2026 delivery forecast to 67,000-70,000 vehicles from 65,000-70,000, and cut capital expenditure guidance to $1.4 billion-$1.5 billion. Chief executive officer RJ Scaringe said the R2, delivered since June, is already Rivian's best-selling vehicle.

Rivian faces Volkswagen software doubts as it buys Third Dimension AI, with $20.6B revenue forecast by 2029

Rivian Automotive faces investor pressure after reports that Volkswagen may use Xpeng's China-developed software in its European EVs. Rivian and Volkswagen have a joint venture (JV), so the shift could affect Rivian's software licensing hopes. Rivian has also bought Third Dimension AI, which adds 3D simulation technology for validating self-driving systems. The company plans supervised point-to-point driving by late 2026 and an Autonomy Plus rollout across its fleet in 2027. Analysts forecast revenue of $20.6 billion and earnings of $736.4 million by 2029, against a current loss of $3.2 billion. Liquidity pressure from high research and plant spending remains the main risk. Rivian's third-quarter update on October 29 is the next key checkpoint.

Rivian Q3 preview: $2B revenue expected as R2 ramp drives deliveries, but losses persist

Rivian will report third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday after the closing bell. Analysts expect a loss of 65 cents per share, 4.3% narrower than a year earlier, on revenue of about $2 billion, up 30%. The electric vehicle maker delivered 19,248 vehicles in the quarter, up 45.8% year over year and above Wall Street's estimate of 18,000. The R2, a smaller and cheaper SUV that reached customers in June, drove the rise. Management expects the R2 ramp to weigh on automotive gross profit again before scale benefits arrive in the fourth quarter. Rivian reaffirmed its 2026 target of 65,000 to 70,000 deliveries. Volkswagen recently provided a $1 billion loan at a fixed 6.03% for 10 years. Rivian shares have fallen 42% this year.
