Requirements
  • A Master's Degree from a school whose nutrition, dietetic, or institutional management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Dietetic registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Alaska state professional licensure, obtained within six months of hire if not already obtained.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Clinical competency within three months of hire and every three years.
  • Completion of an approved dietetic internship program.
  • Knowledge of medical nutrition therapy and clinical nutrition.
  • Working-level computer knowledge.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effective behavior change.
  • Skills in clinical nutrition services, including screening, assessment, diagnosis, education, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation using the Nutrition Care Process for patients of all ages and levels of care.
  • Skills in education, counseling, and teaching.
  • Proficiency with basic computer software, including Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Resource Patient Management System, or other electronic medical record charting software.
  • Ability to work with hospital nutrition staff and other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, ward clerks, and diabetes team members.
  • Ability to function independently on assigned patient care units.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form with patients, the public, hospital staff, medical staff, and physicians.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Clinical Competency Assessment certification from SEARHC.
  • Registered Dietitian license from the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing.
Responsibilities
  • Provide individual or group nutrition screening, assessment, diagnosis, education, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation for ambulatory patients using the Nutrition Care Process.
  • Document ambulatory nutrition care in the patient's medical record using established departmental protocols, including relevant coding.
  • Conduct nutrition screening, assessment, diagnosis, education, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation for hospitalized patients at all levels of care and age using the Nutrition Care Process.
  • Document inpatient nutrition care in the patient's medical record using established departmental protocols.
  • Provide nutrition guidance and individual assessments, diagnosis, education, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation for long-term care residents using the Nutrition Care Process.
  • Document long-term care nutrition services in patient or resident records using established protocols.
  • Clarify or communicate patient diet orders, food preferences, menu choices, and formula needs with Hospital Nutrition Services staff.
  • Complete menu revisions, modifications, and nutrient analysis of inpatient menus.
  • Serve as a member of the Diabetes Team and Patient Care Conference when patient workload permits.
  • Provide department leave and on-call coverage in collaboration with the Clinical Nutrition Manager.
  • Assist with teaching the diabetes prevention program, participate in community activities, and support other activities that promote good nutrition as needed.
  • Maintain and apply current scientific knowledge about food and nutrition to individuals and groups in states of health and disease within the social, economic, and cultural context of the Alaska Native and American Indian population.
