Walmart casts Walton Goggins as Scrooge in Muppets holiday ads. Walton Goggins stars as Scrooge in Walmart's Muppets campaign, turning a Christmas classic into a story about gifts, deals and delivery. The opening song from The Muppet Christmas Carol does not need a new punchline to make it recognizable. Kermit, Miss Piggy and the movie's other familiar characters already bring a particular kind of holiday chaos to a story about a man who has forgotten the point of Christmas. This year, Walmart has found a way to put that old story back on the screen, with Walton Goggins as the latest Ebenezer Scrooge. In Walmart's new holiday campaign, A Who Knew Carol, the retailer works with Disney and The Muppets Studio to reimagine the 1992 film through a modern shopping lens. The setting is Victorian London, but the things Scrooge is supposed to discover are gifts, seasonal savings and ways to get an order delivered quickly. Table of contents. Jump to each section: Why the Muppets still make Christmas feel familiar. The Muppets have a ready-made advantage as holiday storytellers. The Muppet Christmas Carol combines Charles Dickens' familiar redemption plot with the characters' particular mix of sincerity and irreverence. Someone can understand the joke of an impatient Scrooge being haunted without needing to know every character's name. That familiarity gives the new spots a shorthand. Goggins steps into Scrooge's place, while Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Rizzo, Pepe and Statler and Waldorf bring their recognizable personalities into the campaign. Stephanie Beatriz plays Scrooge's niece and also features in Spanish-language material. These are not generic holiday mascots standing beside a sale sign. They are characters with an existing fictional world and a story that can accommodate surprise visitors. The connection to Walmart's broader positioning is deliberate. William White, the retailer's chief marketing officer, compared Scrooge's change of heart with Walmart's attempt to change shoppers' expectations. He called the retailer's positioning "a reappraisal story for us as well." Scrooge has to rethink what matters, while the retailer hopes shoppers will reconsider what they can find at Walmart. That is the cultural bargain of a nostalgia-based ad. Recognizability gets a viewer into the scene quickly, but the creative still has to give them something new. A familiar song and a recognizable cast can establish the mood; the modern retail references are what make this version an advertisement rather than another retelling of the film. How Scrooge becomes a Walmart shopping guide. The campaign borrows the idea of three visiting spirits and assigns each a practical shopping lesson. One points to gift discovery and Walmart's broader product selection. Another introduces Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers. A third makes the case for Express Delivery, which Walmart says can be as fast as 30 minutes for eligible orders. This structure lets each retail message become part of the story instead of a separate promotional announcement. A shopper following Scrooge from one encounter to the next also encounters the retailer's assortment, prices and convenience proposition. The joke lands precisely because Victorian Scrooge has no reason to understand any of these modern terms. In the opening film, the team also revisits the musical number "Scrooge," a key part of the 1992 movie, using period-style sets. Rizzo even comments on the fact that Walmart did not exist during the story's era. That wink matters: the script acknowledges the mismatch instead of asking the audience to take a product pitch inside a Dickens adaptation literally. Goggins' casting gives the campaign a second layer of continuity. He played the Grinch in Walmart's previous holiday advertising, and now returns as another famously reluctant Christmas character. The two roles are distinct, but the recurring performer helps the seasonal work feel connected rather than entirely reset each year. Why the holiday story stretches across channels. A holiday commercial has to do more than play once. Walmart's campaign was developed with Publicis Groupe agencies Fallon, Leo New York, The Community, Digitas and Zenith, with material planned across television, streaming, online video, social platforms, out-of-home placements, audio and creator channels. The common story gives that distribution a recognizable starting point. A viewer might encounter the longer film on a streaming platform, a shorter reminder of the ghosts while watching a program, and a product-specific message elsewhere. The characters and Scrooge premise identify the campaign even when the available space or viewing time changes. There is room for individual stars without changing the core idea. Walmart has also signaled further Miss Piggy fashion-focused work, an extension that makes sense for a character already associated with dramatic style. But using multiple familiar faces does not itself prove people will watch, share or shop. Walmart has not reported campaign-specific sales or audience results for the new work. This approach has a contemporary retail counterpart. Target's 2026 holiday work puts D'Arcy Carden in a fictional Academy of Giftology, turning gift selection into an episodic comedy. Walmart uses an established film world; Target invents a school. Both approaches treat the holiday shopping dilemma as something a character can explain, rather than asking viewers to pay attention to a list of deals by itself. What marketers can learn from the Muppets. The most interesting part of the campaign is not simply that a big retailer bought access to recognizable characters. It is how a familiar entertainment story becomes a framework for several different shopping needs. * Start with a story people already understand. The redemption arc of A Christmas Carol gives the work a beginning, characters and reasons for Scrooge to encounter new information. Walmart can build on that plot instead of explaining the premise from scratch. * Give the commercial message a role in the plot. The spirits represent gifts, savings and delivery. Each proposition has a reason to appear, which makes the transitions easier to follow than an unrelated sequence of offers. * Let one idea travel without repeating the same scene everywhere. A long film, shorter spots and character-led extensions can stay recognizable while leaving room for specific products, channels and audiences. There are limits to the formula. An entertainment license can supply familiarity, but viewers still need to understand what the retailer is offering. A cameo that has no connection to the product may create a moment of recognition without helping anyone decide where to shop. For Walmart, the creative choice fits the larger Who Knew? premise: the brand wants people to look again at an everyday retailer and discover something they did not expect. Goggins' Scrooge is being asked to do much the same thing. That is what makes this adaptation more coherent than a standard celebrity appearance. Its nostalgia is not a separate layer spread over the advertising. The old Christmas story gives the new shopping message a sequence, a voice and a reason to exist. Could 'Avengers: Doomsday' shatter the all-time domestic opening weekend record? ByJosip Kraljik Published onOctober 27, 2026 Marvel / Disney The box office has already witnessed history this year. In July, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' opened to a staggering $360.1 million domestically and $932 million worldwide, narrowly edging past the $357.1 million debut of 'Avengers: Endgame' to claim the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time. Watch next. Now Marvel is preparing for its next giant swing. 'Avengers: Doomsday' arrives on December 18, and its presales have been unlike anything the industry has seen, starting with $16.5 million in premium-format tickets sold in the first 24 hours when sales opened in July. That momentum has analysts wondering just how high the film can go. As Boxoffice Pro posed on its podcast, the industry may be on the verge of the first-ever $400 million domestic opening weekend, a milestone the outlet says is by no means guaranteed but definitely in play for 'Avengers: Doomsday'. The outlet also pointed to a very promising fourth quarter ahead. With the Russo brothers' crossover leading the charge, December could deliver one of the strongest box office stretches in recent memory. If 'Doomsday' clears the $400 million mark, it would mark the second time in a single calendar year that Marvel resets its own opening weekend record. The buzz is grounded in remarkable advance sales. 'Doomsday' became the first film to pass $40 million in domestic presales roughly 100 days before release, and Disney has since confirmed that domestic advance sales have topped $50 million. Are Fiction Horizon on the verge of the first ever $400M domestic opening weekend? It's by no means a guarantee, but definitely in play for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY this December. https://t.co/v5Q6p6xQC9 - Boxoffice Pro (@BoxOffice) October 26, 2026 Globally, tracking firm Global Box Office reported the film crossed $100 million in presales on October 6, and the total has reportedly since climbed past $125 million. Overseas, it became the fastest film ever to pass $1 million in pre-release sales in both Brazil and the U.K. Not everyone agrees on where the opening will land. Global Box Office has projected a domestic debut between $260 million and $300 million, which would be enormous but still short of the record. Worlds collide | An exclusive preview of Marvel's new Avengers movie assembles Bryce Harper, Freddie Freeman, Jacob Misiorowski, Junior Caminero and Randy Arozarena | Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters everywhere December 18 https://t.co/WX1YtKjAKt - MLB (@MLB) October 24, 2026 Others are far more bullish. Tracker AnthonyJPHer has forecast around $120 million in Thursday previews and an opening weekend between $425 million and $450 million, while World of Reel previously suggested a debut in the $400 million range. Prediction markets reflect that uncertainty. A Manifold market asking whether 'Doomsday' will break the all-time domestic opening record traded at 43% implied probability as of October 25. Analysts have warned that early presales may not translate directly into opening weekend results. No blockbuster has opened advance sales this early, meaning the numbers are naturally front-loaded compared with films that sell tickets for only a few weeks. New trailer for 'Avengers: Doomsday' In theaters December 18 https://t.co/1wsiTk1Nnv - Culture Crave | (@CultureCrave) August 15, 2026 The film also won't have IMAX screens on opening weekend, since 'Dune: Part Three' holds the format exclusively for 3 weeks. Despite that limitation, 'Doomsday' has continued to perform strongly across other premium formats. The December 18 frame could be record-breaking regardless of whether 'Doomsday' tops $400 million. Tracker EmpireCity Box Office expects the Marvel film to outgross 'Dune: Part Three' by a ratio of roughly 3.2 to 1 or even 4 to 1. Should both films clear $100 million, it would be the first time 2 separate films opened above that threshold on the same weekend. Many analysts expect Dunesday to set a new overall domestic weekend record. Stand together. Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters everywhere December 18. Get your tickets now: https://t.co/gA9Cd3iqUk https://t.co/XVQHe7sEoE - Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) October 25, 2026 With the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the original X-Men uniting against Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, the stage is set for a potentially historic debut. Fans will find out in just a few weeks whether the record falls. Have something to add? Let Fiction Horizon know in the comments!

Instagram developing TV version of Reels and testing 90-minute video uploads. Key Takeaways 90-minute video uploads are in testing at Instagram as Meta develops a dedicated TV version of Reels. Meta is targeting living-room digital ad spend, placing Instagram in direct competition with YouTube, Netflix, and Disney. Connected television platforms yield longer viewing sessions and premium advertising rates, but creator revenue sharing remains unproven on Instagram. Quick summary · Verify with source Living room screens represent the ultimate prize for digital ad spend, and social platforms are eager to claim that territory. Media executives must watch whether Instagram can actually persuade creators to deliver long-form programming without proven revenue-sharing models. Instagram is entering the battle for television watch time by developing a dedicated TV experience and testing long-form video limits. The company is actively working on a living-room adaptation of its video surface while opening upload thresholds to 90 minutes. This shift places the Meta-owned network in direct competition with YouTube's smart TV footprint, as well as streaming mainstays such as Netflix and Disney. Bringing Reels to the big screen. The initiative signals a major evolution in how the platform expects audiences to consume content. While Instagram originally designed Reels for quick vertical browsing on smartphones, internal leadership notes that user habits are shifting toward shared experiences. "We've been hearing for a long time that people love to watch Reels together in their living rooms with their friends, so we've been working on a TV version of Reels," Tessa Lyons, Instagram's Vice President of Product, stated regarding the strategic shift. By moving directly onto smart TVs, Instagram aims to capture casual group viewing. Connected television sets consistently generate longer session times than handheld mobile devices, which helps platforms command premium advertising rates. The threat to established streaming giants. YouTube has spent years cementing its status as the top streaming platform on television screens by total watch time. Legacy entertainment brands like Disney and Netflix have increasingly recognized social video as their primary competition for leisure hours. Instagram's deliberate transition to TV shows that the boundaries between social media and traditional television are fading fast. Discover more Optimize Ops A 90-minute upload ceiling allows creators to publish feature-length documentaries, full podcast episodes, comedy specials, and scripted series. These formats were once exclusive to dedicated streaming services or YouTube channels. If users start streaming social video on their main home screens, legacy entertainment providers face fresh competition for audience attention. The lingering monetization question. Despite the ambitious technical expansion, a critical question hangs over the initiative: will creators actually get paid? Producing 90 minutes of polished video requires far more capital, time, and crew support than filming a 30-second mobile clip. YouTube built its dominance on connected TVs by offering creators a dependable share of ad revenue through its long-running partner programs. By contrast, Instagram has faced criticism from independent producers over shifting payout bonuses and unpredictable monetization features. Without an attractive payout structure, top-tier video creators may hesitate to invest their resources into Instagram's TV ecosystem. The road ahead for social television. Transitioning from short mobile scrolling to a lean-back television format presents technical and cultural hurdles. Viewers interact differently with a television remote than with a mobile touchscreen. Instagram will need to adapt its user interface to support longer viewing sessions without losing the discovery engine that made Reels popular. The coming months will test whether Instagram can build an ad model that satisfies both corporate brands and top video creators. If the platform succeeds, it could reshape how audiences watch digital video at home. Free: cross-border payment fee cheat sheet.
