Requirements
  • One to three years of experience providing peer support to people with psychiatric disabilities and/or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system is required, including experience such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, or community mental health groups.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license is required, along with adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle and a safe driving record.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have maintained a valid United States driver's license for at least six months.
  • Applicants must pass a driver's screening background check.
  • The role requires the ability to perform physically active work, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting at least 25 pounds, and assisting persons served with activities of daily living.
  • The role requires the ability to operate a computer and office equipment, communicate with persons served and staff, and meet specified visual, hearing, mobility, and physical-position requirements.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • The employee must become a Certified Peer Specialist or obtain a Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Recovery Coach Academy certificate of completion within six months of hire.
  • The employee must maintain confidentiality and respect the legal, civil, and human rights of persons served.
  • The employee must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate and conduct intake processes for referred persons served within 72 hours with Team Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts clinicians.
  • Welcome, orient, and engage persons served in services and support, and help them prepare for goal setting.
  • Help persons served complete the 8 Dimensions of Wellness Assessment and Power Statement at intake.
  • Provide support, education, advocacy, and transitional assistance using personal recovery experiences.
  • Introduce persons served to other Team Peer Specialists and maintain contact with people who struggle with engagement.
  • Promote access to healthcare and employment services, safe housing, community tenure, self-sufficiency, and successful service completion.
  • Support self-determination and participation in treatment, care coordination, and support-service planning and evaluation.
  • Facilitate Peer Support groups and connect people with psychiatric conditions and substance use or addiction to recovery tools and resources.
  • Implement Peer Support-oriented Treatment Plan interventions and complete documentation according to Certified Peer Specialist and applicable Codes of Ethics standards.
  • Help persons served develop self-advocacy skills and provide information and training on recovery and self-management plans.
  • Facilitate completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plans individually and in groups.
  • Assist persons served in strengthening relationships with chosen family and friends and in building recovery and support networks.
  • Provide ongoing problem solving, skill training, side-by-side support, coping techniques, and self-help strategies.
  • Teach, consult, and collaborate with Team members to promote recovery values, language, and culture.
  • Onboard, orient, and coach new Team Peer Specialists through shadowing, review of Certified Peer Specialist standards, and applicable Codes of Ethics.
  • Model and train staff in recovery-oriented, person-centered, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Perform, train, supervise, mentor, and model evidence-based recovery-oriented interventions, including Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, and Wellness Recovery Action Plans.
  • Supervise Peer Specialists, provide training and consultation, address ethical conflicts, mentor staff, and communicate with the Team Leader about performance issues.
  • Lead the Team's Peer Specialists in organizing and delivering Peer Support.
  • Visit all GLE and SIE settings regularly to provide Peer Support.
  • Receive monthly and as-requested supervision, consultation, and training from the Director of Recovery Services.
  • Participate in the Lead Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup and provide feedback on policy, program development, and work decisions.
  • May co-facilitate the Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Experience or academic training that can substitute for the stated education is acceptable in some cases.
