About the job

Requirements
  • At least 1 year of industry or applied research experience working on real modeling systems.
  • Strong grounding in dynamical systems, time-series modeling, control, or sequence modeling.
  • Experience evaluating models where ground truth is partial, delayed, or noisy.
  • Ability to design validation strategies when standard benchmarks are insufficient.
  • Comfort working with first-of-its-kind architectures and open-ended questions.
Responsibilities
  • Validate a new AI modeling primitive for long-horizon dynamical systems.
  • Design experiments and benchmarks that test stability, generalization, and predictive fidelity over time.
  • Compare the primitive against existing modeling approaches.
  • Identify failure modes, assumptions, and edge cases.
  • Clearly articulate why the model succeeds or fails in different regimes.
  • Translate findings into guidance for future architecture and system design.
  • Explore applicability across multiple domains with complex dynamics, not just biology.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with state-space models, world models, neural ordinary differential equations, diffusion over time, or hybrid approaches.
  • Prior work on systems where prediction degrades over long horizons.
  • Exposure to biological, physical, or other real-world dynamical systems.
  • A track record of identifying why models fail, not just improving metrics.

About the company

Becoming.ai builds robotic systems with closed-loop metabolic control to sustain mammalian development outside the body, paired with AI models that learn how development unfolds under different interventions. Its core hardware delivers nutrients, removes waste, and controls gas exchange in real time, creating a controllable environment for long-running developmental data. The AI analyzes this data to predict developmental trajectories and identify interventions that shift outcomes, enabling virtual organism models. The company differentiates itself by combining hardware-enabled metabolic exchange with dynamical AI models to generate and study controlled developmental data over extended periods, rather than just analyzing static biological samples. Its goal is to enable long-term, predictable developmental studies that can inform regenerative medicine, drug discovery, and fundamental developmental biology.

What believers are saying

  • February 2026 EF coverage and August 2026 job posts show active technical hiring.
  • Becoming is recruiting applied AI, robotics, and dynamical-systems talent, signaling platform expansion.
  • Its 2026 story fits pharma demand for longer-horizon developmental data and intervention testing.

What critics are saying

  • Development depends on unproven lab-grown placenta hardware; Core Memory said no literature precedent in March 2026.
  • Colossal and Nexaborn are entering artificial-womb territory, compressing Becoming’s technical lead.
  • Ethical and regulatory scrutiny around mammalian development outside bodies can trigger shutdowns within 12 months.

What makes Becoming unique

  • Becoming’s 2026 white paper pairs ex utero mammalian development with predictive AI models.
  • Its closed-loop robotic metabolic exchange regulates nutrients, waste, and gas exchange in real time.
  • EF reported Becoming grew a mouse embryo with a beating heart and lab-grown placenta.
