Liquidia to pay $380.7M to end all six lawsuits with United Therapeutics

Liquidia has settled all six lawsuits with United Therapeutics, ensuring patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension can keep using its inhaled drug YUTREPIA. The company will pay a net $380.7 million across 2026 and 2027. The deal follows a September 30, 2026, US District Court ruling that Liquidia infringed a United Therapeutics patent covering treatment of a related lung condition. Liquidia will not appeal and has asked to remove that indication from YUTREPIA's label. Payments include $175 million within 30 business days and $145.4 million in two instalments of $72.7 million, due by January 31, 2027, and April 30, 2027. Liquidia will also pay $60.3 million this month to parties with interests in related antitrust litigation. Liquidia reported preliminary third-quarter YUTREPIA net sales of $222.7 million and $396.1 million in cash as of September 30, 2026. It expects to fund the payments without new financing.

Varda raises $251M to leverage gravity in space for drug production.

Varda raises $251M to leverage gravity in space for drug production. October 2, 2026 | Capitalizing on space's microgravity, the United Therapeutics-partnered Varda Space Industries aims to make medicines with better bioavailability and stability than Earth-produced molecules. Varda Space Industries has raised $251 million to manufacture medicines in space for patients on Earth. Lux Capital and Natural Capital co-led the series D round for Varda, valuing the company at $1.6 billion, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Varda, which was set up in 2021 by former SpaceX engineer Will Bruey and Founders Fund partner Delian Asparouhov, has now raised $598 million in total since its founding. The California-based startup launched its first mission in 2023 and has completed six successful reentries. Varda has booked 28 launches with SpaceX and other providers between 2027 and 2029, Reuters reported on Wednesday. The support reflects the belief that Varda is "the first and only company delivering a real cadence of launches and reentries," Shahin Farshchi, partner at Lux Capital, said in a prepared statement. Space's lower levels of gravity, which make objects seem weightless, influence crystal formation in ways that could affect drug properties such as stability and bioavailability. Evidence of the microgravity's effect on drug molecules has fueled decades of research. NASA sponsored a report on the topic in 1978, and Merck's space station research informed its subcutaneous Keytruda formulation. With the cost of sending a kilogram to orbit falling 96% from 1960 to 2025 and forecast to drop further through 2040, one barrier to commercially viable drug production in space is lowering. Varda is among the companies seeking to capitalize on the shift. The company launches its capsules into orbit aboard commercial rockets, such as SpaceX's Falcon 9. The capsules contain equipment for processing pharmaceuticals in orbit. After completing processing, the capsule separates from the orbital satellite, returns to Earth and is recovered for analysis. Other groups have shown that a small quantity of space-grown crystals can support multiple terrestrial production batches. In May, United Therapeutics partnered with Varda to develop improved formulations of treatments for rare lung indications. The pact supports the exploration of "how space-based manufacturing could contribute to significant improvements for rare pulmonary disease treatments," United Therapeutics CEO Martine Rothblatt said in a statement at the time. Varda and United Therapeutics have competition in the race to discover and make drugs in orbit. Space Microgravity Development (SpaceMD), part of the space and defense technology company Redwire, has given former Merck researcher Paul Reichert a strategic advisory role as it pursues orbital research and manufacturing. SpaceMD has signed a contract for a mission using Starfall, SpaceX's recently launched in-space manufacturing program. And Voyager Technologies operates research facilities aboard the International Space Station. The company's capacity, which supports a microgravity-enabled drug discovery pact with Space LiinTech, will be enhanced next year with a system for automated drug screening. Liquidia slumps after US court rules for United Therapeutics in patent fight.

Liquidia slumps after US court rules for United Therapeutics in patent fight. By Thomson Reuters Sep 30, 2026 | 3:41 PM Sept 30 (Reuters) - Liquidia shares plunged nearly 50% on Wednesday after a federal judge ruled that its lung drug infringes key patent held by rival United Therapeutics, dealing a major blow to the treatment's commercial outlook. The US District Court for the District of Delaware found that Liquidia's dry-powder drug, Yutrepia, infringed two foundational claims of United Therapeutics' '327 patent. The patent covers methods of treating pulmonary hypertension-associated interstitial lung disease, or PH-ILD, using inhaled treprostinil and certain dry-powder delivery features. In a related order, the court denied Liquidia's motion to throw out evidence regarding United Therapeutics' patent ownership, ruling that Liquidia had received adequate notice before trial and failed to make timely objections. "This is a key element of the case for Liquidia, and denial of the motion to strike has negative readthrough to the final decision on the case," said Raymond James analyst Ryan Deschner. The decision strengthens legal protections for United Therapeutics' blockbuster inhalation treatment, Tyvaso. Its shares jumped 12.3% to $540.54 on the ruling. Leerink Partners analysts said the court ruling gives United Therapeutics what looks like a "'win', essentially" by confirming that Yutrepia infringes a "valid UTHR patent." While, RBC Capital Markets analyst Lisa Walter said it "significantly clouds the path" for Yutrepia to compete. "We respectfully disagree with the court's decision... and are fully prepared to pursue all available appellate options," Liquidia CEO Roger Jeffs said in a statement. Liquidia, Jeffs said, plans to ask the US FDA to remove the PH-ILD indication from Yutrepia's label. Shares of Liquidia hit their lowest level in nearly four months, putting the company on track to lose about $3.18 billion from its market value, if losses hold. A final judgment is expected in about a week, analysts said. (Reporting by Christy Santhosh and Kamal Choudhury in Bengaluru; Editing by Shilpi Majumdar)

Helicopter Museum honors hydrogen-powered flight team.

Helicopter Museum honors hydrogen-powered flight team. WEST CHESTER, PA - The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) is excited to announce that it has selected the team from United Therapeutics subsidiary Unither Bioélectronique and Robinson Helicopter Company to receive the 2026 AHMEC Achievement Award. The award recognizes the team's historic first flight of a piloted, hydrogen-powered helicopter - a significant milestone in the development of zero-emission vertical flight. The achievement involved replacing the conventional Lycoming engine in a Robinson R44 helicopter with a hydrogen fuel-cell system, a lithium-ion battery pack to provide additional power when needed, and an electric motor. According to Mikaël Cardinal, Vice President of Program Management at Unither Bioélectronique, approximately 90 percent of the energy used during the flight was supplied by the hydrogen fuel cells. Martine Rothblatt, Ph.D., Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of United Therapeutics has been a driving force behind the development of sustainable aviation technologies and is a past recipient of the AHMEC Achievement Award for her leadership in the development of the R44 electric-powered helicopter. "Every year, we solicit nominations for the AHMEC Achievement Award, and this year it was evident that the hydrogen-powered helicopter team was the clear choice," said Dan Newman, Chairman of AHMEC's Board of Trustees. "We are proud to recognize this remarkable achievement and present the award during the museum's 30th anniversary celebration on October 18, 2026." Established in 2009, the AHMEC Achievement Award is presented annually by the Museum's Board of Trustees to an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of vertical flight during the preceding year. Merrimack Anheuser-Busch property purchased by United Therapeutics Corporation.

Merrimack Anheuser-Busch property purchased by United Therapeutics Corporation. The 300-acre property off DW Highway became available after the plant closed. The biotech firm currently has a location in Manchester. September 6, 2026 By Jeffrey Hastings Biotechnology firm United Therapeutics Corporation has acquired the former Anheuser-Busch brewery site in Merrimack for $47 million, according to sources familiar with the matter. The transaction secures one of Southern New Hampshire's largest industrial parcels, spanning nearly 300 acres off Daniel Webster Highway. The sale follows Anheuser-Busch's previous announcement that it would close the longtime facility at 221 Daniel Webster Highway as part of a nationwide restructuring of its supply chain network. The Merrimack Anheuser-Busch property purchased by United Therapeutics Corporation, they currently have a location in Manchester also. (Jeffrey Hastings). Positioned between Route 3 and the Merrimack River near the Nashua line, the sprawling site featured a massive industrial brewing operation, distribution hub infrastructure, tasting room and beer garden spaces, and stables that once housed the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales. The acquisition marks a major transition for a site that served as a local industrial centerpiece for decades. The facility had a town valuation of $35 million and generated more than $780,000 annually in local property taxes. In addition, the brewery was historically one of Merrimack's largest municipal wastewater utility users, contributing between $1 million and $1.5 million in annual utility fees. United Therapeutics is expected to bring hundreds of high-paying jobs to the region, drawing specialized talent from across the United States. Specific construction plans, architectural designs, and a timeline for redeveloping the vast industrial campus have not yet been disclosed. Silver Spring, Maryland-based United Therapeutics was founded in 1996 by Martine Rothblatt. The public benefit corporation specializes in developing therapies for rare, chronic conditions - most notably Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Its commercial product portfolio includes Tyvaso, Remodulin, Orenitram, Adcirca, and Unituxin. Beyond pharmaceuticals, the company is an industry pioneer in bioengineered organ manufacturing, gene-edited porcine organ transplant technologies (xenotransplantation), and 3D bioprinting designed to address the global organ shortage. The purchase represents a substantial expansion of the company's New Hampshire footprint. United Therapeutics currently operates a facility on Commercial Street in Manchester. It previously explored buying a large property off Hackett Hill Road near the Manchester-Hooksett town line, but ultimately opted not to complete the transaction.
