Requirements
  • Maintain a current United States driver's license without violations or restrictions.
  • Accurately oversee a caseload of 50 families.
  • Ensure compliance with housing policies and procedures under city and state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed case progress notes and enter them into the approved client-records database.
  • Complete required paperwork and statistical requirements on a timely basis, including a minimum of 15 database contacts per week.
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED and at least two years of experience working within a homeless shelter or with the homeless population.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of housing programs, intake processes, and eligibility requirements for the shelter system.
Responsibilities
  • Manage relationships with brokers, landlords, New York City housing, supportive housing, and other housing resources to provide referrals to shelter families.
  • Coordinate community trips to view available apartments and accompany clients to housing intakes or provide transportation means.
  • Conduct housing workshops on program education, landlord interviews, bill payment, apartment applications, housing preferences, moving requirements, and related topics.
  • Work with the case management team to support clients' exit strategies and discharge plans, including referrals for next steps or involuntary transfer.
  • Meet or exceed quarterly performance targets for facility length of stay, exits, and housing placements.
  • Assist in driving families to move-ins using a Salvation Army vehicle when necessary.
  • Report housing and permanent-placement issues to the Case Manager Supervisor and place homeless families into permanent housing.
  • Provide supportive assistance to assigned families to identify and resolve barriers to permanent housing placement.
  • Instruct families on application and housing-search processes; monitor applications, lease signing, and public-assistance payments; provide eligible housing referrals; facilitate move-outs; and document eviction and arrears history.
  • Arrange housing intake and assessment meetings for newly assigned residents within 24 hours of admission and assess housing-program eligibility and application timelines.
  • Reinforce residence rules, regulations, the Department of Homeless Services Code of Conduct, and housing-related client responsibilities.
  • Accept and organize resident intake referrals from HERO when assigned.
  • Participate in required client hearings, discharges, and weekly housing, intake, and case-conferencing meetings.
  • Participate in weekly clinical supervision with the Director of Social Services.
  • Work one late day per week from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one rotating weekend shift per month.
  • Assume the same position at another Salvation Army shelter when directed by shelter or department leadership.
  • Perform other assignments and tasks as directed by shelter or department leadership.
