Requirements
  • One year of related experience in cooking or a similar production facility is required.
  • Ability to read and write and follow standardized recipes and production sheets is required.
  • Ability to perform basic kitchen mathematical calculations is required.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly during a daily shift is required.
  • ServSafe certification is required, or the employee must be able to acquire food safety certification within three months of hire.
  • Ability to clearly and respectfully communicate with agency staff, volunteers, clients, and vendors is required.
  • Solid time management and organizational skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare precooked meals from the Aging and Nutrition Services kitchen and heat them to the proper serving temperature.
  • Plate and serve lunch and dinner meals for a high volume of individuals.
  • Plate and serve meals with high-quality presentation and attention to participant satisfaction.
  • Provide program participants opportunities to give feedback when appropriate.
  • Serve guests respectfully using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Portion food according to the number of meals needed while minimizing waste and leftovers.
  • Follow Colorado Food Program portion guidelines using the Volunteers of America menu as a guide.
  • Use menu plans to requisition products and supplies accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area and follow sanitation policies.
  • Maintain product safety using proper temperature controls.
  • Use and maintain kitchen equipment in a clean, safe, and appropriate manner.
  • Chill, label, and properly store unused products and leftovers.
  • Prepare special-event meals and requested items as directed by the Food Service Project Manager.
  • Track and input meals served and offered into meal-tracking systems.
  • Order food and kitchen supplies weekly from the Volunteers of America kitchen.
  • Attend required meetings and agency training.
  • Direct, train, or assist kitchen employees, temporary workers, or volunteers as assigned.
  • Perform responsibilities in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain predictable and consistent attendance.
  • Work Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., including designated holidays and special events when scheduled.
  • Occasionally supervise program volunteers and temporary laborers in the absence of a Food Service Manager or Associate Director.
  • Use knives, utensils, and commercial cooking equipment throughout the shift.
  • Stand, pivot, and walk on hard surfaces for most of the shift.
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and work around heat, cold, steam, fumes, chemicals, and cleaning solvents.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of high-volume institutional cooking experience is preferred.
