  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • One to three years of related work experience is required.
  • Basic computer familiarity and the ability to navigate web-based applications are required.
  • A Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Licensed Nursing Assistant certificate or diploma is required, or at least five months of direct patient-care experience in a clinical or research setting. Qualifying experience includes work as a medical assistant, patient care technician, or clinical nursing assistant, or nursing or medical student status with completion of one clinical rotation.
  • Ability to make decisions using general instructions and practices that require some interpretation, and to recommend solutions to moderately complex problems.
  • Ability to analyze varied problems using direct observation, knowledge, skills, and general precedents.
  • Ability to follow procedures, prioritize and organize work within general guidelines, and seek assistance with difficult or unpredictable situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English.
  • Ability to comprehend and converse in English with medical center staff, patients, families, and external customers.
  • Working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and policies, and the ability to apply them in varied situations.
  • Ability to lead small projects or work groups, foster a collaborative and respectful team environment, and improve workflows.
  • Ability to provide professional, respectful, service-oriented customer service, use active listening and problem-solving, and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Competence to provide patient care to young adults aged 16–30, middle-aged adults aged 30–60, and elderly patients aged 60 and older.
  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force frequently and to stand for periods or move throughout the hospital campus.
  • Must be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate with and assist patients, employees, and the general public courteously by phone and in person; provide accurate information, directions, or guidance and follow up promptly.
  • Collect complete and accurate information from patients and callers, prioritize it, and facilitate communication to providers.
  • Prepare schedules and other documents in accordance with quality standards, and maintain patient confidentiality in conversations and when distributing patient information by email, fax, or other means.
  • Perform patient check-in, registration, and verification of demographic and fiscal information using a computer system.
  • Ensure patient records, documents, laboratory slips, and X-rays are available with appropriate patient identification for patient encounters.
  • Perform clinical-setting activities, which may include assisting providers, phlebotomy, electrocardiograms, and vital signs; perform laboratory tests and quality-control procedures as indicated; and provide patients with instructions for tests and procedures.
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and resource; collaborate with the practice support team; provide training and share knowledge; oversee others’ work; solicit feedback and ideas; and recommend more effective use of resources.
  • Monitor patient and visitor flow, proactively resolve flow issues, and liaise between patients and practice staff to support timely service delivery.
  • Keep patient exam rooms clean and organized, clean rooms after use, dispose of contaminated materials appropriately, order supplies and equipment, restock supplies, and monitor expiration dates.
  • Schedule diagnostic and laboratory tests while accommodating patient and provider needs; enter patient insurance and managed care plans, including prior authorizations, referrals, and pre-certifications; explain processes to help patients meet care and insurance requirements.
  • Assemble records according to medical center policy and Joint Commission standards, and handle requests for patient information according to established guidelines.

Beth Israel Lahey Health rolls out Heidi's AI scribing to all physicians after 90% report better patient presence

Beth Israel Lahey Health is rolling out Heidi's ambient AI scribing tool to all its physicians following a successful trial across its facilities. The health system, which serves over 6,000 providers across 14 hospitals and 175 primary care practices, prioritises addressing physician burnout, with nearly half of US physicians reporting burnout. During a six-month trial offering Heidi to 1,000 providers, the majority adopted the technology. Survey results showed 89% were satisfied with note quality, 90% felt more present with patients, 74% reduced after-hours work time, and 82% experienced reduced cognitive load during visits. The implementation demonstrates how ambient AI can deliver immediate relief to physicians whilst benefiting patients and the healthcare system. Heidi supports over 2 million consultations weekly globally and has raised $96.6 million from investors including Point72 Private Investments and Blackbird.
