Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field is required; equivalent industry experience building and shipping hardware systems at scale is also considered.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience designing and operating infrastructure for hardware at scale, such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, or industrial Internet of Things systems.
  • Demonstrated experience building provisioning or imaging pipelines for large numbers of physical devices, from hundreds to thousands of units.
  • Strong Linux systems administration skills, including kernel configuration, systemd, networking, storage, package management, and hardware interfaces.
  • Proficiency with containerization using Docker and/or Podman, including container runtime configuration and image management at the operating-system level.
  • Fluency in Bash and Python scripting and automation.
  • Experience building or operating end-of-line or hardware acceptance test systems.
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, and support contexts and communicate clearly in each context.
Responsibilities
  • Design and own the end-to-end provisioning pipeline from bare-metal operating-system imaging through hardware configuration, software installation, calibration, and pre-shipment validation.
  • Own provisioning for robot hardware peripherals, including depth cameras, LiDAR, GPS sensors, motor drivers, networking, and other embedded subsystems.
  • Develop end-of-line test frameworks and reporting infrastructure, including pass/fail logging, failure diagnostics, and per-unit traceability.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure provisioning tooling is robust, repeatable, and operator-friendly.
  • Develop tooling and runbooks to diagnose, repair, and re-provision robots in the field with minimal downtime.
  • Work with research and development to commercialize and reliably deploy new hardware and features in production.
  • Build monitoring and logging infrastructure for provisioning pipelines and runtime environments, integrating it with dashboards and alerting for fleet-level health.
  • Document all systems, processes, and runbooks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with A/B or partition-based update systems and rollback strategies on embedded or edge Linux devices.
  • Experience with configuration-management tools such as Ansible for device-fleet configuration and runbook automation in an embedded or edge context.
  • Experience with Balena or similar container-based embedded fleet-management and delta-update systems.
  • Familiarity with ROS, CAN bus, motor controllers, or other robotics-adjacent hardware and software interfaces.
  • Familiarity with custom Linux images, real-time kernel configuration, latency tuning, or other hardened or minimal Linux distributions for embedded deployment, including understanding the tradeoffs involved.

Burro by Augean Robotics develops autonomous, vision-based robots to assist farm workers. The flagship Burro uses on-board cameras and sensors to perceive fields, plan paths, and perform tasks alongside laborers, with operators monitoring through service agreements. Revenue comes from selling Burro units plus ongoing maintenance, service contracts, and software updates. The goal is to reduce dependence on seasonal labor and boost productivity for large-scale growers in crops like table grapes, blueberries, and nursery crops.

This figure was substantially lower than the trailing twelve-month average, but in line with January 2023’s figure of $523 million. The largest robotics investment in January 2024 was a $100 million round secured by Norway-based 1X, a developer of humanoids (See Table 1 below). Chinese humanoid developer Robot Era raised $14 million in February. Makers of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) for agricultural operations were well represented among February robotics investments.
