Requirements
  • Graduate from a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Possess the current radiography license required by the state board where services will be provided.
  • Be nationally certified as required by the work location; Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia require registration as a Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists upon hire, while Pennsylvania requires registration within six months of graduation from the Medical Imaging Program.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete required state and federal criminal background checks for regulated areas.
  • Differentiate various shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  • Improvise altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use when routine positioning is compromised by a patient's condition, age, or ability.
Responsibilities
  • Rotate through all diagnostic areas, including fluoroscopy, mobile imaging, routine imaging, the operating room, endoscopy, and orthopedics, to develop technical skills.
  • Perform imaging procedures based on patient assessment, service requests, and imaging protocols, with periodic image evaluation and supervision.
  • Produce optimally qualitative images using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff through shielding, collimation, the inverse square law, and minimizing repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to imaging to optimize procedures and patient care and safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related comfort, hygiene, range of motion, and support.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to procedural guidelines and protocols.
  • Educate patients about radiographic procedures by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Interact positively with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff to promote a team approach to Radiology services.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvement throughout the hospital to support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Perform imaging techniques and patient-care and guest-relations behaviors in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, hospital and Radiology Department policies and procedures, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Complete required in-services and competencies by their due dates and apply the knowledge gained.
  • Position patients accurately according to established protocols.
  • Participate in coordinating the daily workflow.
  • Provide limited instruction and clinical supervision to radiology students on patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use, within Radiology program policies and accrediting-body requirements.
  • Ensure that all components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.
  • Work with radiation-safety monitoring and a dosimeter when exposed to minimal occupational radiation.
  • Operate imaging equipment with automated moving parts.
