Requirements
  • At least 4 years of experience shipping production full-stack software.
  • Strong TypeScript skills on the front end and back end.
  • Experience with NestJS, or deep Express/Fastify experience with an understanding of dependency injection.
  • Experience with Next.js and React, including hooks, App Router, server-side rendering, and client-side rendering.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL, including schema design, indexing, transactions, and migrations.
  • Ability to distinguish effective patterns from problematic legacy patterns.
  • Ability to design scalable solutions that fit within an existing rigid system.
  • Testing discipline using Jest, Playwright or Cypress, and Supertest.
  • Experience with API design, including REST, authentication, and backward-compatible evolution.
Responsibilities

  • Read the existing Express/MongoDB and Backbone/React layers, understand their shortcomings, and apply better practices in new development.

  • Build NestJS modules using dependency injection, guards, and interceptors.
  • Build Next.js applications using the App Router, server components, and typed clients.

  • Help migrate money-bearing and transactional data from documents into a normalized SQL schema with real constraints and safe migrations.
  • Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests as a default part of development.
  • Identify and flag issues such as flaky tests, N+1 queries, and missing indexes so they can be prioritized and addressed.
  • Use AI tooling efficiently while understanding and taking responsibility for every line of code that is delivered.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience migrating away from legacy code.
  • Experience with fintech, payments, or ledgers.
  • Experience with message queues such as RabbitMQ, Amazon SQS, or Kafka.
  • Experience with MongoDB and Mongoose aggregation.
  • Experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, or continuous integration.
  • Deliberate use of AI agents in production workflows.

What believers are saying

  • ClassWallet won a May 2025 leadership reset, with Stephen Lindeman now CEO.
  • Tennessee still used ClassWallet initially, proving state adoption before Student First Technologies displaced it.
  • Arizona launched a 2026 vendor inquiry for ESA tracking, preserving a possible renewal path.

What critics are saying

  • Missouri's contract expires June 30, 2026, and officials are reviewing ClassWallet after breach scrutiny.
  • Oklahoma's January 13, 2026 dismissal keeps litigation alive through amendment, discovery, and reputational drag.
  • Arizona's 2023 permission-setting breach exposed student disability data; another incident can end state contracts.

What makes ClassWallet unique

  • ClassWallet’s public-funds wallet automates approvals, reimbursements, and audit trails across state programs.
  • It already serves ESA and scholarship programs in Arizona, Missouri, and Tennessee.
  • The platform’s marketplace integrates Amazon, Office Depot, and Best Buy for controlled spending.

ClassWallet, Tennessee school choice bidder, received funding from Chinese VC firm led by 'AI guru

ClassWallet, which bid to manage Tennessee's school choice programmes, received $1.5 million in seed funding in 2016 from Idea Bulb Ventures, a Chinese venture capital firm now called Sinovation Ventures. The company has since raised additional funding, including $95 million in 2023. Sinovation Ventures is chaired by Kai-Fu Lee, described as a Beijing-based venture capitalist and AI expert who spent his childhood in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Critics suggest Lee's AI investments benefit China's security apparatus, with one expert calling him "a player in Chinese digital authoritarianism". ClassWallet has faced bipartisan criticism. Arizona Democrats raised concerns over a 2023 data breach, whilst Oklahoma's Republican governor sued the company over allegedly misspent education funds. Tennessee is currently accepting bids for school choice programme management, with ClassWallet expressing interest despite past controversies.
