Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline is required.
  • At least 5 years of professional mechanical engineering experience is required, ideally in battery, electric vehicle, or energy storage hardware.
  • A demonstrated track record of taking designs from concept through production is required.
  • Expert-level 3D computer-aided design skills using Onshape, SolidWorks, or an equivalent tool are required.
  • Strong command of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability principles is required.
  • Experience independently owning mechanical subsystems with minimal oversight is required.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and lead design review discussions is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end mechanical design of battery modules and packs, including cell integration concepts, structural components, brackets, enclosures, busbar and interconnect geometry.
  • Drive design reviews, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design-for-manufacturability decisions.
  • Define mechanical interfaces across the assembly and negotiate trade-offs with electrical and controls teams.
  • Make final design trade-off decisions balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Own thermal simulation setup, execution, and post-processing using SimScale, ANSYS, or an equivalent tool.
  • Evaluate and select thermal interface materials and interface materials based on performance and cost trade-offs.
  • Design and run thermal test campaigns, analyze discharge data, and identify root causes of thermal issues.
  • Correlate simulation outputs with physical test results and refine models accordingly.
  • Define and lead mechanical validation test plans covering vibration, drop, and thermal cycling.
  • Own root cause analysis of test findings and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Review and approve test reports and documentation from junior engineers.
  • Maintain computer-aided design revision history and bill-of-materials structure for assigned subsystems.
  • Author engineering documentation, test procedures, and work instructions.
  • Lead design review discussions and drive action items to closure.
  • Mentor Mechanical Engineer I and II staff on computer-aided design practices, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and design fundamentals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis or computational fluid dynamics tools such as SimScale, ANSYS, or SolidWorks Simulation for thermal and structural analysis.
  • Direct experience with battery-powered devices, electric vehicle systems, or energy storage products.
  • Hands-on experience with machining, sheet metal, plastics, and assembly manufacturing processes.
  • Working knowledge of UN 38.3 or UL safety standards.
  • Experience leading a physical prototype build from computer-aided design through assembled hardware.
  • Prior experience mentoring or informally leading other engineers.

ZapBatt makes Lithium Titanate battery systems for fast charging, long lifespan, and high safety, selling battery packs in various sizes and offering custom solutions. The batteries use Lithium Titanate chemistry to charge in under 20 minutes and endure up to 15,000 cycles, while a Battery AI analyzes 26 performance factors to continuously optimize output. It stands out by pairing ultra-fast charging and very long cycle life with an AI-driven optimization layer and the ability to tailor packs for different industries. Its goal is to provide reliable, efficient energy storage across industries, lowering total cost of ownership and promoting sustainable energy use through scalable, customized battery systems.

What believers are saying

  • Proper Voltage raised new capital in May 2026, extending runway into commercialization.
  • The website updated July 31, 2026, signaling active product and messaging development.
  • Hiring signals from July 2026 suggest expansion across engineering, sales, and deployment teams.

What critics are saying

  • May 2026 funding was only $6.5 million, limiting manufacturing and sales scale.
  • Incumbents like Tesla, Enphase, and battery OEMs can bundle integrated power electronics.
  • If certification slips in UPS or defense, revenue stalls and the platform story fails.

What makes Proper Voltage unique

  • Proper Voltage sells a battery operating system, not just cells, reducing redesign costs.
  • Its bOS works across lithium titanate, sodium-ion, and other chemistries.
  • Carlsbad-based founders Charlie Welch and David Felzer target critical power, robotics, and defense.
