Requirements
  • Maintain active national pharmacy technician certification as a PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or NHA Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) throughout employment.
  • Graduate from an academic pharmacy technician training or educational program.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Have at least one year of customer service-related experience.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Have advanced typing and personal computer skills.
  • Be able to sit or stand for extended periods of up to eight hours, stoop, reach upward, and perform repetitive motions inherent to the role.
  • Successfully complete VA fingerprinting and a background investigation, and obtain PIV sponsorship with two forms of approved photo identification before the first day of work.
  • Complete credentialing through VetPro and obtain approval from the VISN 22 facility boards.
  • Provide a negative TB test current within the past year, or a chest X-ray if the test is positive, with annual repetition required.
  • Provide proof of measles, mumps, and rubella immunization or a rubella titer of at least 1.8.
  • Complete all VA-mandated TMS training, including Privacy and Information Security and HIPAA, before starting and annually thereafter.
  • Must not appear on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
  • Meet all citizenship and work authorization requirements; employment is contingent on E-Verify.
  • Maintain an approved alternate worksite suitable for remote patient-care work within 50 miles of the Albuquerque VA facility.
Responsibilities
  • Process and submit patient requests for new prescriptions and renewals, including controlled substances, using approved CCC pharmacy protocols.
  • Answer telephone calls from patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals and use computerized prescription profiles to respond to inquiries within the technician scope of knowledge.
  • Document patient and staff interactions appropriately, including in the Computerized Patient Record System when required.
  • Respond to questions about expired, deleted, discontinued, or unavailable prescriptions and escalate professional-scope inquiries to a pharmacist.
  • Verify patient identity using two identifiers before communicating patient health information.
  • Meet national performance metrics and quality monitoring standards for inbound call management.
  • Follow pharmacy phone center scripting and handle, transfer, and hold calls efficiently and professionally.
  • Resolve Veteran concerns at first contact whenever possible and refer them to other VA resources as needed.
  • Seek assistance from Team Lead Technicians, pharmacists, or supervisors for unusual questions or unresolved caller concerns.
  • Maintain EHR access for all serviced sites and comply with regulations governing access to computerized files.
  • Maintain active national pharmacy technician certification and complete additional assigned duties.
  • Work variable eight-hour shifts within the 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM Pacific Time operating window, with possible weekend and holiday coverage.
