Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Biology, animal science, or a related field is required; equivalent education and/or experience may substitute where permitted.
- Four years of experience managing an Animal Care Program, including supervisory experience with animal care staff and management of AAALAC-accredited animal care and housing facilities, is required.
- The role requires a robust understanding of multiple research species' housing requirements and the physical systems and equipment used to house animal species for biomedical research.
- The role requires expert-level understanding of research animal care and welfare standards, regulatory guidelines, species-specific housing needs, Principal Investigator animal study needs, and standard operating procedures for unique research animal facility processes.
- The position requires working around multiple animal species, specialized animal housing equipment, biohazardous agents, and chemicals.
- The position requires the ability to meet externally imposed deadlines and provide support outside business hours for staffing needs and on-site emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Husbandry Operations Unit and provide direction, goal setting, and management for Operations staff.
- Lead Operations Unit Animal Care Supervisory staff and provide project management for Operations Unit revisions and improvements.
- Write and update department standard operating procedures relevant to Operations.
- Plan and support space allocations and resource allocations, including staffing.
- Act as the subject matter expert for species-specific housing and procedural equipment.
- Work with vendors and Facilities Services on Operations support, projects, and program changes.
- Review maintenance contracts relevant to Operations Unit systems and equipment.
- Lead process improvement identification and implementation across the Operations Unit.
- Provide on-call coverage for 14 days followed by 14 days off, 24 hours per day, for Operations and animal-facility-related emergencies.
- Serve as the Department's Operations Unit Project Manager.
- Develop and manage projects under the direction of the Departmental Chair, Senior Director of Animal Resources, and departmental faculty veterinarians.
- Prepare the AAALAC Program Description and oversee department cost tracking for animal-facility physical plant repair and maintenance costs.
- Provide subject matter expertise and research for vendor proposals for light monitoring in animal housing spaces to maintain housing regulations.
- Work with vendors to manage upgrades to the environmental monitoring system for animal housing areas to meet regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Provide Operations Unit project support for preparations for the three-year AAALAC accreditation cycle.
- Manage Operations staff, assign and direct work duties, and oversee the Program Operations Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Program Support Supervisors, and indirect reports.
- Interview and hire staff, assign and review work, conduct annual performance reviews, recommend and initiate upgrades or staff recognition, and take corrective actions up to recommendations for termination.
- Make hiring decisions for new or vacant positions, train employees, conduct job performance reviews, and resolve grievances or complaints.
- Support the Office of Animal Welfare in emergency planning for research groups with animal protocols.
- Lead implementation, training, programming, and ongoing development for the department's animal census collection software system, AOps.
- Manage and train staff on animal-facility environmental monitoring systems and serve as their subject matter expert.
- Manage and train staff on species-specific housing equipment and serve as the subject matter expert.
- Provide liaison support to University groups including the Departmental Chairperson, Administrator and Finance unit, Animal Purchasing, Veterinary Services, Rodent Health Monitoring, Office of Animal Welfare, Environmental Health and Safety, UW Facilities Services, Campus Architecture and Planning, and Office of Emergency Management.
- Participate in University hazardous waste, biohazard/safety, environmental enrichment, and departmental safety committees, serving as Committee Lead for the Departmental Safety Team.
Desired Qualifications
- Six to eight years of experience in related fields is preferred.
- Education or work experience in related fields of animal health, animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, or animal facility management is preferred.
