Blackstone and Halliburton invest $1B in VoltaGrid to power AI data centres with gas microgrids

Blackstone and Halliburton have invested $1 billion in VoltaGrid, a Houston startup building gas-powered microgrids for data centres. Blackstone's Tactical Opportunities strategy provided roughly 90% of the capital, with Halliburton contributing the remainder. The deal comprises $775 million in new equity and $225 million in secondary purchases. It values VoltaGrid at more than $10 billion. The startup is simultaneously acquiring Propell Technologies Group, an 800-person supplier, to support its 7.5 gigawatt order book through 2030. Fitch Ratings estimates VoltaGrid's annual EBITDA will reach $1.1 billion by 2028, more than five times its 2024 figure. The company offers tech firms faster access to energy for AI systems, bypassing traditional utility timelines.

Blackstone's $450B private equity chief Joe Baratta steps down after 28 years

Joe Baratta, Blackstone's longtime head of private equity, is leaving the firm at year-end after 28 years. Blackstone manages approximately $450 billion in private equity assets as part of its $1.3 trillion total assets under management. Baratta joined Blackstone in 1998 and became global head of strategy in 2012. He led major investments including Merlin Entertainments and Hilton Worldwide Holdings. Last year, he moved into a broader role overseeing strategies within the private equity unit and helped develop the firm's AI investment strategy. His role will not be filled, according to an internal memo from CEO Steve Schwarzman and President Jon Gray. The departure leaves only two executives on Blackstone's board. Baratta is reportedly interested in pursuing a career in politics.

Air Canada to buy back 27.6M shares at $29 each in $800M repurchase programme

Air Canada has announced preliminary results of its $800 million share buyback programme, planning to repurchase approximately 27.6 million shares at $29 per share. This represents roughly 9.8% of the airline's outstanding shares as of 24 September 2026. The offer was oversubscribed, with 66.8 million shares tendered. Shareholders will have around 41% of their validly deposited shares repurchased on a pro-rata basis. The buyback is partially financed by proceeds from selling a minority stake in Aeroplan to funds managed by Blackstone and La Caisse, alongside other Canadian investors. Air Canada aims to reduce its share count to pre-pandemic levels. Upon completion, the airline expects to have 252,745,331 shares outstanding. Final settlement details will be released following verification by TSX Trust Company.

Blackstone launches multi-strategy fund for non-US investors with $311B wealth platform

Blackstone has launched the Blackstone Private Markets Fund (BXPM), offering non-US investors access to its perpetual funds through a single allocation for the first time. The perpetual flagship strategy provides simplified access to Blackstone's private markets platform, including credit, real estate, infrastructure, and private equity. BXPM is the first multi-strategy solution under Blackstone Portfolio Solutions, an initiative introduced earlier this year to expand its $324bn wealth offering. Rashmi Madan, a 15-year Blackstone veteran promoted to global head of portfolio solutions this year, leads the initiative. "We have thoughtfully designed BXPM to enable investors to access private equity, infrastructure, real estate and private credit in a single intentionally constructed portfolio," said Madan. Blackstone manages over $1.3tn in assets across various strategies.
