Requirements
  • Candidates must be pursuing a degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field, or otherwise be interested in the opportunity.
  • A high school diploma or equivalency is required.
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record are required.
  • Candidates must commit to full-time employment for six months, January to May.
  • Candidates must be able to lift 50–75 pounds safely.
  • Candidates must be able to work independently and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Candidates must have the aptitude to learn and perform the mathematical equations used in field testing.
  • Candidates must be able to work overtime and weekends as necessary.
  • Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in varied climates, terrains, and conditions.
  • College students working toward a civil engineering, construction management, or related degree are preferred.
  • Some related work experience in construction, labor, landscaping, engineering, or a similar field is preferred.
  • Experience driving a pickup truck or another large vehicle is preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Perform testing on construction materials, including soils, concrete, masonry, and asphalt.
  • Conduct onsite materials testing on commercial and transportation construction projects.
  • Work with project managers and other technicians to ensure specifications are followed.
  • Apply classroom knowledge and theories to real construction situations, including construction means and methods and resolving issues that arise during construction.
  • Complete training in construction safety, nuclear density gauge use, American Concrete Institute Field Technician I practices, and materials laboratory work.
  • Learn procedures and gain exposure to ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, ICC, and DOT standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • The co-op offers mentoring from a licensed engineer and practical engineering applications.
  • Successful completion of examinations and demonstration of ability lead to industry certifications.
