Bass Pro Shops acquires historic Cheeca Lodge in Florida Keys. June 16, 2026 Bass Pro Shops has agreed to acquire the iconic Cheeca Lodge, one of the most historic fishing and sporting resorts in the Florida Keys for an undisclosed price. The acquisition was made through the company's nature-based resorts division. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Long recognized as a gathering place for anglers, adventurers and families seeking the timeless spirit of the Keys, Cheeca Lodge has welcomed generations of visitors drawn to Islamorada's world-famous waters, natural beauty, and laid-back hospitality," the company said in a release announcing the acquisition. "Bass Pro Shops and its founder, passionate angler and noted conservationist, Johnny Morris, are excited to enhance the resort while preserving its authentic character and heritage of connecting guests to the natural beauty of the Florida Keys." The company said this philosophy will guide the future of Cheeca Lodge. "Cheeca Lodge reinforces Bass Pro Shops' ongoing commitment to hospitality through world-class nature-based properties," Bass Pro continued. "Referred to as America's Premier Wilderness Resort, Bass Pro's flagship Big Cedar Lodge in the Missouri Ozarks hosts 7.5 million guests annually." In keeping with the founder's commitment to conservation, over half of the resort's 24,000 acres has been donated and forever preserved as part of the not-for-profit Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation. "I have been very blessed to have spent my entire life around the great sport of fishing," added Johnny Morris. "Growing up as far from the ocean as you can get in the Missouri Ozark Mountains, fly-fishing beautiful streams for perch and smallmouth bass. I will never forget dreaming about and then getting to catch my first tarpon on a fly. I was 16 years old fishing with my best buddy, my Dad and Captain Sonny Eslinger on Buchanan Bank out of Bud N' Mary's Marina. From that special day forward, like many others, I have come to have enormous respect for the history of Islamorada, and the generations of anglers and families who have made memories here or who are blessed to call the Keys home. We're humbled and honored to have the opportunity to help protect it and carry that story forward." As recipient of the Audubon Medal, Morris is "especially excited that Cheeca Lodge, in addition to its world-class fishing, can be further celebrated as an expanded adventure outpost to connect visitors to the amazing natural treasures of the Everglades and Florida Keys." "Johnny and Bass Pro Shops have always understood the importance of protecting the Everglades and celebrating our fishing heritage, making them outstanding partners for the future of the Keys," said Eric Eikenberg, CEO, The Everglades Foundation. Cheeca Lodge will also reportedly unite with World Wide Sportsman Store and Marina, which overlooks Florida Bay with direct access to the Everglades and the Gulf Stream. The Islamorada Fish Company, Morada Bay and Pierre's restaurants, located adjacent to the landmark Store & Marina, provide waterfront dining. Originally founded in 1967 by legendary anglers George Hommell, Jr. and Billy Pate, World Wide Sportsman quickly became a premier, world reknown saltwater specialist shop. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida grants wish of fishing boat to 12-year-old boy who battled cancer. June 1, 2026 DANIA BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida boy got a big surprise and a dream come true, thanks to the partnership of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and Bass Pro Shops. The 12-year-old from Pompano Beach took a trip to Dania Beach for the kind of surprise that checks off a major bucket list item. 7News cameras captured the moment Benjamin Rodrigues was presented with his very own fishing boat that he had wished for a very long time. "Oh my God, oh my God!" said Rodrigues as he covered his mouth in awe and walked closer to the boat. The generous gift from the organization is aimed at helping the young boy work toward his goal of becoming a sport fisherman. The child bravely battled leukemia for the past year. From hospital visits to chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he was sidelined for a while. "He's only 12, but he definitely has a purpose, and he definitely has that in mind. Some good days and some bad days, and you wish it wouldn't have happened, but he's been able to rebound," said Rodrigues' father, Lucas. Now, after surviving those hardships, he's ready to pursue his dream in the water. "It's like wow! So surreal to me," said Rodrigues. "I was feeling like just, 'Am I dreaming? Is this real?" Chris Smeeton, General Manager at Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach, said it was amazing to see the young boy's reaction. "To see his face, to see the wow on his face and again knowing he's going to be on the water with his brothers and his family, you know, again making memories, that's what it's all about," he said. Lucas said that the year in the hospital introduced the family to the cancer community, from the hospitals providing medical care to a network of families and generous donors who make moments like these possible. "What me and my wife who came to find out is that we didn't know much about the cancer community and it's an amazing community, supportive community," said Lucas. The young boy said he's grateful for the gift. "I want to thank Make-A-Wish because a boat is not something that's, you know, cheap or easy to get, but they did it. They did it for me because I'm struggling with cancer, so I just want to thank you guys so much," said Rodrigues. Smeeton said the only thing he wants to see now is pictures of Ben and his family on the water.
Bass Pro Shops plans first store in New York Metropolitan area. May 29, 2026 Bass Pro Shops is planning to open a store in Hicksville, NY, its first store on Long Island and first in the New York Metropolitan area. Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) representatives confirmed to local media that Bass Pro was given a preliminary approval at a meeting on Thursday night to move forward with the application. Bass Pro Shops is seeking a 20-year PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes), mortgage recording, and sales tax exemptions from the Nassau IDA. The store is expected to create 200 jobs with an estimated annual payroll approaching $8 million, according to the application. The IDA told Greater Long Island it will now begin an economic analysis. A meeting for final approval would be scheduled for a later date. The company plans to lease the 9.8-acre site formerly occupied by a Sears Auto Center at 195 North Broadway and construct a 130,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store, according to its application with Nassau IDA. The construction project is estimated to cost $65 million. The Hicksville Bass Pro Shops would be the chain's only location in downstate New York. The closest existing Bass Pro is located in Bridgeport, CT., a 67-mile drive from the proposed Hicksville site. Bass Pro operates 181 Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's stores combined. Expect big bags from college anglers at James River. May 22, 2026 RICHMOND, Va. - According to Virginia pro Ryan Lachniet, college anglers will need to hit the tides right to unlock the magic of the James River during the 2026 Strike King Bassmaster College Series event presented by Bass Pro Shops. "It should be really good," the former Campbellsville University angler said. "Last October, I won a tournament out there with a two-day total of 49 pounds. The James has been really good the last couple of years." Tournament days are scheduled for May 29-30. Daily takeoffs and weigh-ins will take place at Osborne Park and Boat Landing in Richmond, Va. This is the final regular-season event for the College Series and the last chance for teams to qualify for the 2026 Strike King Bassmaster College Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops and earn points toward Team of the Year standings. The James River has been a popular stop for the Bassmaster Tournament Trail over the past several years. Lachniet, who qualified for the 2025 Nitro Bassmaster Elite Qualifiers presented by Bass Pro Shops, won the Mercury B.A.S.S. Nation Qualifier at James River presented by Lowrance last April with a three-day total of 53 pounds, 6 ounces, but he anticipates the fishing will be better for this College Series event. "You can catch them anywhere in the system this time of year, but it will probably be dominated within three miles of the ramp or as far away as you can run," Lachniet said. "The top half of the Chickahominy and then close to Osborne are going to be the two areas that dominate." Lachniet anticipates the bass will be in either a postspawn phase or in their early summer patterns. The bass in the early summer pattern will be set up around tide-related current breaks, and the college teams are in luck, because the tide forecasts call for an outgoing tide for much of the tournament. "High tide is good for catching a lot of fish, but a lot of the really big bags come from low tide," Lachniet said. "Someone is going to catch a mega-bag." The Chickahominy River is historically the place to win on the James River. Lily pads, hydrilla and cypress trees are key cover elements, as well as the Walkers Dam tailrace. A cold winter caused some of the hydrilla to die off, which Lachniet thinks could make for much better fishing. The closer anglers stay to takeoff, the less the tide comes into play, but finding the right current breaks will be critical. Kenta Kimura won an April Bassmaster Open within sight of Osborne Landing in 2022. "There could be 20 4-pounders on one of those current breaks, and you can catch 20 pounds in five casts," Lachniet said. "I think one-cast spots will be really important." With shad and bream being the key forage, Lachniet anticipates that anglers who are willing to commit to a big glidebait or swimbait can have a lot of success. ChatterBaits and frogs around the vegetation and lily pads can produce key bites, as well as wacky rigs and Texas-rigged stickbaits or creature baits.
