About the job

Requirements
  • An advanced degree (PhD or MS with substantial experience) in a quantitative field such as physics, applied mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering, computer science, or similar, with a strong focus on data analysis and modeling.
  • At least 6 years of hands-on experience, in industry or postdoctoral work, building models for real-world sensor or process data rather than only web, natural language processing, or recommender systems.
  • A track record of identifying data problems such as artifacts, drift, miscalibration, or pipelines producing plausible but incorrect results.
  • Strong Python skills and experience with scientific computing or machine learning tools including NumPy, SciPy, pandas, and scikit-learn.
  • Ability to design and execute end-to-end analysis workflows covering data ingestion and cleaning, feature engineering, model training, validation, and reporting.
  • Experience with at least one high-dimensional measurement modality, such as spectroscopy, imaging, time-series or multivariate process data.
  • Grounding in statistics, including hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, experimental design, and control charts, and ability to reason about uncertainty and robustness.
  • Experience designing or implementing automated experimental workflows or test rigs integrating hardware and software, such as lab automation, instrument control, hardware-in-the-loop setups, or industrial test stands.
  • Ability to communicate technical results clearly in writing and in person to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in lab or industrial environments with noisy data, incomplete logging, and partially instrumented systems.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build algorithms that map multimodal sensor data, including optical emission spectra, electrical signals, thermal and other sensors, and process context, into robust material fingerprints and properties.
  • Work with systems, plasma, and applications engineers to connect hardware and software by designing and automating experiment protocols for benchtop, inline roll-to-roll, and robotic piece-to-piece platforms.
  • Shape the first generation of models and metrics for battery electrodes and ceramic barrier coatings, influencing what customers see and trust.
  • Own end-to-end modeling pipelines from raw sensor data to customer-facing metrics and alerts.
  • Develop multimodal representations of plasma-material interactions that generalize across materials, geometries, and processes.
  • Design and implement automated experimental protocols, including parameter sweeps, design of experiments campaigns, and calibration routines, coordinating plasma hardware, motion and robotics, sensing, and data capture.
  • Work with embedded, controls, and software engineers to design deployment architectures across edge devices, host controllers, and cloud systems.
  • Define performance metrics, validation strategies, and monitoring for models running in benchtop products and pilot manufacturing lines.
  • Ensure data trustworthiness by interrogating raw and derived data for instrument artifacts, drift, and silent pipeline failures, and building checks to catch bad results before they reach a model, customer metric, disclosure, or paper.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with PyTorch or similar machine learning tools.
  • Comfort working with hardware APIs such as vendor SDKs, REST or gRPC services, and serial or fieldbus interfaces from Python or similar, including reasoning about timing, synchronization, and error handling.
  • Experience with multimodal data fusion combining spectral, imaging, and process data, or related techniques in autonomous systems, medical imaging, or industrial inspection.
  • Background in plasma physics, optical diagnostics, or materials science, or strong interest and ability to learn these fields.
  • Experience deploying models into edge or real-time systems with latency and reliability constraints.
  • Familiarity with lab automation or experiment orchestration tools such as custom Python control scripts, LabVIEW, or PLC/SCADA, and interest in building lightweight, code-driven alternatives.
  • Experience with experiment tracking, MLOps, or data-centric tools such as MLflow, Weights & Biases, or DVC, and modern software engineering practices including Git, code reviews, and CI/CD.
  • Prior work with battery manufacturing, roll-to-roll processes, or high-temperature coatings such as turbine components.

About the company

SirenOpt creates sensors and software to speed up research and development and make manufacturing of high-performance thin films cheaper. Its hardware sensors collect real-time data on thin-film processes, while the accompanying software analyzes the data, runs models, and helps users optimize production. The company combines both hardware and software with consulting services to help clients integrate these tools into existing workflows. This blend of devices, analytics, and advisory support sets SirenOpt apart from others who may focus on just one part of the stack. The goal is to help customers in electronics, renewable energy, and advanced materials innovate quickly and produce high-quality thin films at lower costs, enabling scalable, efficient manufacturing.
