Requirements
  • Be a United States citizen or legal resident.
  • Possess a valid Arizona driver's license.
  • Have a bachelor's degree, preferably in the behavioral sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university.
  • Be at least twenty-one years old.
  • Complete background and reference checks, interviews, polygraph and/or drug testing, and a pre-employment psychological examination.
  • Successfully complete the 40-hour Defensive Tactics Training Academy within 120 days of employment.
  • Demonstrate competency and understanding of the physical and verbal techniques and tactics presented at the Defensive Tactics Training Academy through proficiency testing.
  • Successfully complete eight hours of defensive tactics refresher training annually.
  • Maintain a certificate of successful completion of defensive tactics training.
  • Successfully complete the Probation Certification Academy and Intensive Probation Institute, if assigned, within the first twelve months of employment.
  • Submit to a medical examination required by the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan.
  • Operate equipment necessary to perform job duties, including motor vehicles, computers, telephones, radios, handcuffs, and body armor.
  • Have the mobility to stand, walk, bend, sit for prolonged periods, and/or drive a vehicle.
  • Have the manual dexterity to reach, grasp, handwrite, and use a computer.
  • Have sufficient vision to see and read, and sufficient hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone.
  • Withstand varying weather temperatures and lift, drag, push, and carry items of various weights.
  • Use self-control, patience, initiative, courtesy, tact, and diplomacy to maintain effective relationships with a diverse population.
  • Apply interviewing, motivating, interpersonal relationship, time-management, organization, and correctional casework methods.
  • Use critical analysis to solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Perform physical work involving restraining techniques, defensive tactics, physical confrontations, emergency situations, and lifting or carrying up to 75 pounds.
  • Read and comprehend court orders, reports, written rules, and regulations; hear and understand speech and radio transmissions; and record information accurately and completely.
  • Observe behaviors and situations, recall facts, work outside in extreme weather conditions, and perform administrative duties in an office environment.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise and observe assigned probationers' compliance with probation conditions, including directing and counseling probationers and conducting field contacts as part of a team.
  • Obtain, assemble, secure, maintain, and file complete identification records, arrest reports, contact notes, and case-plan information to prepare written reports for the court.
  • Build relationships and encourage compliance with case plans through telephone, work-site, and home contacts during daytime and evening hours.
  • Direct or refer probationers to community resources, treatment, or other interventions based on assessments, behaviors, and probation conditions.
  • Participate in case-review conferences to determine whether a change in supervision level is warranted.
  • Perform searches, breathalyzer tests, and urinalysis collection, and make documented efforts to locate absconders.
  • Serve warrants, make arrests, and bring probationers before the court, including defaulting probationers facing revocation.
  • Appear and testify in court.
  • Monitor restitution and probation-fee payments and ensure that victims' notification rights are provided according to statutory requirements.
  • Respond appropriately and effectively in confrontational situations and use defensive tactics and techniques when necessary.
  • Demonstrate competency in physical and verbal defensive tactics and techniques, including forcefully raising the arms, performing aerobic activity, standing for up to two hours, balanced movement, hand strikes, impact-weapon use, kicks, controlled falls, drills, exposure to oleoresin capsicum spray, ground fighting techniques, break-fall recovery, and ground techniques.
  • Investigate cases referred to the officer and prepare written reports for the court.

  • Knowledge of social and community corrections casework.
  • Knowledge of general human behavior and evidence-based practices in community corrections.
