The first APAC hire: why US and european SaaS companies keep getting Asia-Pacific wrong.

The first APAC hire: why US and european SaaS companies keep getting Asia-Pacific wrong. By Dan Richards, Head of BD TLDR: SaaS companies expanding into Asia-Pacific keep making the same hire: one country manager, in one city, expected to cover a region that spans a dozen languages, a dozen regulatory regimes and wildly different buying cultures. Singapore has become the default landing pad (SaaScada and Plaud both anchored their APAC push there in 2026) but a hub city is not a strategy, and a single senior hire is not market coverage. The companies winning in APAC hire for role clarity first, coverage, validation or building, before they hire for seniority. Get that sequencing wrong and you burn twelve to eighteen months and a six figure OTE finding out your first hire was solving a problem you never actually defined. Singapore is not APAC. Two of 2026's most visible APAC moves came out of Singapore within weeks of each other. SaaScada, the cloud native core banking platform, opened a Singapore regional headquarters and had CEO Nelson Wootton relocate there personally to lead the expansion, a signal that core banking modernisation demand across the region was worth a founder's own address change. Plaud is going further still, building its first APAC R&D hub in Singapore and targeting roughly 150 local hires by the end of 2026. Both companies picked the same city for different reasons, and that is the first thing hiring managers get wrong. Singapore is a sensible entry point for Southeast Asia. It is a weak proxy for Japan, South Korea, Australia or India, all of which run on their own languages, procurement cycles and channel norms. Treating a Singapore hire as an APAC lead instead of a Southeast Asia lead sets that person up to fail the moment a real deal shows up in Seoul or Sydney. The Country Manager trap. The default move is to hire one senior person, call them Country Manager or Head of APAC, and expect them to build pipeline, close deals, manage compliance and report back to a HQ that has never sold in the region. Executive search practitioners working the Japan market describe this as confusing three different jobs: the builder who stands up a market from nothing, the translator who adapts a working HQ playbook for local buying behaviour, and the caretaker who manages an already proven book of business. Hiring a caretaker when the market needs a builder, or the reverse, is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes in APAC expansion, and it usually is not visible until month nine, when pipeline still is not moving and nobody can agree on why. What the money says. The compensation data backs up how seriously companies are taking the region. Median Account Executive total compensation in Singapore now sits around SGD 205,986 (a base of roughly SGD 118,913 plus variable), with enterprise AE OTE stretching from around S$60,000 at the low end past S$300,000 for the strongest performers, comparable to a mid tier US or UK market rather than a discount alternative to it. Deel's 2026 Global Hiring Report puts Hong Kong and Singapore at the top of global demand for overseas talent, while noting companies across the region have shifted from aggressive recruitment toward retention: better pay, clearer progression, stronger culture, because the AEs and country leads who can actually do this job well are not easy to replace. Payments infrastructure company Tazapay closed a $36M Series B extension in March 2026 specifically to scale its rails across APAC and other emerging markets, one more data point in a broader pattern of funding rounds earmarked for regional GTM builds rather than product spend alone. What actually wins in APAC hiring. The profile that wins in APAC almost never looks like the AE who crushed quota in San Francisco or London. It looks like someone who has already sold across a fragmented, multilingual region and knows the difference between a Singapore procurement process and a Jakarta one, who can run a deal with minimal HQ support because HQ genuinely cannot help them at 2am their time, and who is comfortable being the only person in the building for the first year. Hiring managers consistently overweight brand name pedigree and underweight this kind of regional fluency, then wonder why a hire who looked perfect on paper cannot get a single deal past a first meeting. The fix starts before the job spec gets written. Decide honestly whether the mandate is coverage (someone visiting the region to keep existing accounts warm), validation (a first hire whose job is to prove or disprove the market before committing more headcount), or building (a genuine market maker with budget and authority). Each of those is a different seniority level, a different comp structure and a different interview process, and running the wrong one is how a company burns a year and a six figure OTE finding out its first APAC hire was solving a problem nobody had actually defined. Plaud launches wearable AI earbuds for workplace tasks.

Plaud launches wearable AI earbuds for workplace tasks. Fri, 28th Aug 2026 (Today) Plaud has unveiled the Plaud One Explorer Edition, a new wearable aimed at professionals. The earbuds are designed to record calls, online meetings, in-person conversations and spoken notes, either when worn or through a standalone case. The product links with Plaud Intelligence software, which analyses recorded conversations and carries out follow-up tasks across connected workplace tools. The launch adds a new hardware product to the growing market for AI-assisted workplace devices, where companies are trying to turn spoken interactions into searchable records and automated actions. Plaud is positioning the product around continuous access to conversational context rather than screen-based use. The device includes an eSIM and 4G LTE connection, allowing it to upload conversations without relying on a smartphone. According to Plaud, this is intended to create a running store of workplace context for transcription, summaries, briefings and task execution. The software works with services including Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion and Slack. It also uses what Plaud calls Skills, a library of workflows, and Plugins, collections of workflows for particular roles. Another part of the system is a feature called Artifacts, which generates draft work such as emails, documents and presentations from recorded conversations. Those outputs can then be edited, shared or exported. Platform update Alongside the new earbuds, Plaud is extending the same software features across its wider product line through an update to its Plaud app. The revised platform is intended to add what Plaud describes as deeper memory, persistent context and workflow execution across interactions. At the centre of the update is Plaud Agent, designed to identify intent within conversations and complete tasks from start to finish. The pitch reflects a wider shift in the AI sector towards systems that do more than summarise information and instead try to trigger actions in third-party software. Plaud framed the product around workers whose jobs depend heavily on meetings and spoken communication. It cited use cases including sales staff drafting follow-up messages after client meetings, executives asking for briefings before entering a room, consultants turning workshops into reports and Chiefs of Staff reviewing the previous week's conversations. That focus places Plaud in a segment where audio capture, transcription and AI-generated output are converging. Several software providers already offer note-taking assistants for online meetings, but Plaud is betting that dedicated wearable hardware and a constant connection will give it a distinct place in day-to-day work. The Explorer Edition is priced at USD $249.99 in selected markets. Each device includes USD $200 in Plaud Credits for access to upcoming agent features and other AI functions. Existing subscription plans will work with the new product in the same way as with Plaud's current devices. The broader app update is also set to reach all Plaud products, suggesting the earbuds are intended to serve as a new front end for a software system the company plans to use across multiple form factors. Plaud said it has had more than 2,500,000 users worldwide since 2023. Based in San Francisco, the company also said it holds a range of security and privacy certifications and compliance standards, including ISO 27001, ISO 27701, GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA and EN 18031. Explaining the rationale behind the launch, Nathan Xu linked the product to how AI systems interpret human intent in daily work. "AI agents become truly useful when they understand the context in which human intent is formed," said Nathan Xu, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Plaud. "That context lives in conversation. Plaud One brings agents closer to the real-world work people do every day, while Plaud Intelligence gives them the context and capabilities to act. We are opening the Explorer Edition because interfaces are proven in the field, and shaped by the people who put them to work."

Plaud One brings AI agents to your ears.

Plaud One brings AI agents to your ears. Plaud is taking its AI platform wearable with the new Plaud One Explorer Edition, a pair of AI earbuds designed to capture conversations, understand context, and turn spoken ideas into follow-up actions. More than an AI note-taker. Plaud One can be worn as earbuds or used through its standalone case to capture calls, online meetings, in-person conversations, and ideas on the go. Built-in 4G LTE connectivity lets the device work without relying on a phone, while conversations can be uploaded automatically for transcription and summarization. That gives Plaud Intelligence a running pool of context it can use to prepare follow-ups, generate reports, and assist with other workflow tasks. Plaud Agent turns talk into action. At the center of the experience is Plaud Agent, which is designed to interpret the intent behind conversations and act across connected tools. Plaud says native integrations will include Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, and Slack. The system can also generate finished outputs such as emails, documents, and presentations that are ready to edit, share, or export. The practical pitch is straightforward: a sales lead could finish a meeting and ask Plaud One to draft a follow-up, while a consultant could turn a workshop into a report without starting from scratch. Plaud App 4.0 is also on the way. Plaud says the new intelligence features will also roll out across its existing products through Plaud App 4.0, which will introduce a redesigned interface for accessing the company's AI tools. Pricing and availability. The Plaud One Explorer Edition is priced at $249.99 and is available for pre-order in selected markets beginning August 27, 2026. Each unit includes $200 in Plaud Credits for upcoming agent capabilities and other AI features. Shipments are expected to begin in Q4 2026, with Plaud App 4.0 rolling out during the same quarter.
