Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Zero to one year of related work experience is required.
  • Medical Assistant competencies must be demonstrated within one year of hire.
  • Basic familiarity with computers and the ability to navigate web-based applications at a basic level are required.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English is required.
  • The ability to comprehend and converse in English with medical center staff, patients, families, and external customers is required.
  • The employee must be competent to provide patient care to neonatal patients from birth to six months, youth from six months to 16 years, young adults from 16 to 30 years, middle-aged adults from 30 to 60 years, and elderly patients aged 60 and over.
  • Protective equipment use and the ability to work with potential exposure to infectious diseases, airborne pathogens, and bloodborne pathogens are required.
  • The role requires the physical ability to perform medium work, stand or move for most of the shift, and frequently sit, walk, stand, bend, twist, grasp, manipulate, push, pull, keyboard, reach, lift, and carry items.
Responsibilities
  • Develop empathetic long-term relationships with patients, families, and colleagues while coordinating care-team activities to support patient, practice, and organizational goals.
  • Assist patients throughout visits by facilitating timely flow, communicating delays, engaging patients about visit reasons, updating medication and allergy lists, reviewing screening questions such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and coordinating between patients and practice staff.
  • Provide the provider with a hand-off when entering the exam room, including the visit reason, abnormal vital signs, and relevant patient information.
  • Perform medical assisting duties under proper supervision, including obtaining vital signs, height, and weight; performing electrocardiograms and point-of-care testing; performing phlebotomy; administering immunizations when certified; and assisting with routine procedures.
  • Lead patient outreach and health-coaching conversations to meet quality and population-health goals, identify health-maintenance and chronic-disease-management needs, and assist with related data gathering.
  • Monitor, order, and maintain medical equipment and supplies by keeping them clean, sterilized, stocked, and within expiration dates and by adhering to control standards.
  • Use the electronic health record to queue prescription renewals, add medications for provider review, enter clinician-directed orders for tests, services, or appointments, and document completed tasks for accurate billing.
  • Schedule diagnostic and laboratory tests and verify patient insurance, prior authorizations, referrals, and pre-certifications.
  • Identify Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance issues, maintain patient-safety practices, report adverse events and near misses, and ensure protected health information is used only for treatment, payment, and operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Health Science is preferred.
  • A Medical Assistant license or certificate is preferred.
  • Registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred.
  • An EMT Basic Certificate 1 license is preferred.
  • A Phlebotomy Certificate 2 is preferred.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
