Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED and graduation from a surgical technician training program are required.

  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or as a Certified Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing is required.
  • The role requires lifting and carrying 40–50 pounds, frequent to continuous standing and walking, patient transport, kneeling, bending, squatting, and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Responsibilities
  • Recognize patients and their families or designated care partners while providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care based on personal preferences, priorities, needs, cultural beliefs, and values.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patient, family, and designated care partners.
  • Inspect the operating room for cleanliness and secure, set up, and prepare the equipment, instruments, and supplies required for surgical procedures.
  • Participate in team time-outs and advocate for patient safety and high-quality care in the perioperative setting.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving the surgical team, including the surgeon.
  • Prepare the sterile field, including draping the patient, and maintain sterile-field integrity.
  • Provide a thorough report to relief personnel regarding the procedure status, instruments, materials, and other pertinent information to ensure a smooth transition during the surgical procedure.
  • Count all sharps, sponges, and instruments with the circulating nurse before, during, and after the surgical procedure.
  • Follow count policies and initiate corrective action when a count is incorrect.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment to ensure efficient unit operations.
  • Help maintain a safe, neat, and clean operating-room environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care.
  • Act as a primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed.
  • Create and maintain the sterile field.
  • Anticipate surgeons' intraoperative needs using knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy, and surgeons' preferences.
  • Work closely with perioperative team members during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.
  • Support the decontamination and sterile-supply areas.
  • Maintain courteous and professional interactions with patients and staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior surgical technician experience is preferred.
