How is Sysco To Go holding up a year later? In May 2025, a new retail concept debuted in Houston: Sysco To Go. The basic idea is a medium-sized cash-and-carry warehouse stocked with some of Sysco's most popular SKUs, ready to go. The concept isn't new, but it is a new format for Sysco's Houston operations. The driving force behind this concept was likely Gordon Restaurant Market's (aka GFS) rapid expansion throughout Houston. Unlike GFS, though, Sysco To Go is more squarely aimed at restaurant customers who need an EIN to open an account. GFS, by contrast, requires no account and positions itself as an alternative to Sam's Club or Costco for smaller businesses or large families. A few weeks after opening the first Sysco To Go store, they opened a second on OST. So how are they doing a year later? Well, I returned to the chain in 2026 to find out. My first impression was that little had changed. The store was certainly busier than on my first few visits, but the selection hadn't changed much. I will give credit to Sysco To Go's pricing, which has improved, at least in some aspects. Non-Sysco item pricing was outrageous, and while I understand the convenience of placing one order with one supplier, that doesn't make as much sense in a cash-and-carry model. I wouldn't describe Sysco To Go as cheap, but their claim that they lower prices isn't unfounded. So, moving on to the next question, why would I think Sysco To Go might have changed? Well, earlier this year, Sysco announced its plans to purchase the Restaurant Depot chain. As I drove up and down the Katy Freeway, passing the old Bed Bath & Beyond in its new shade of blue, my mind raced with possibilities, synergy, and other buzzwords. But when I actually entered the store, I realized nothing had changed. I did buy an industrial-size jug of teriyaki sauce, though! In the long run, Houston Historic Retail'll have to wait and see how this pans out, but I get the feeling Sysco To Go might be headed to the back burner. Sharing options:
