About the company

Character AI builds an AI platform that lets users create and manage virtual characters with distinct personalities for use in games and business applications. The platform enables NPCs and virtual customer service representatives to interact with people in realistic, engaging ways. It works by providing tools to design character personalities, manage their behavior, and deploy them across digital environments, typically via a subscription or licensing model that gives ongoing access and updates. What sets Character AI apart is its focus on both entertainment (gaming) and practical service use, offering a scalable, multi-domain solution with a steady revenue stream rather than a single-market product. The company's goal is to broaden digital interactions by making character-driven experiences more natural and personalized, driving engagement and value for developers and businesses in the growing AI market.

Disney pushed Character.AI into bankruptcy to shed legal risks in $5.5M deal for staff and tech

Character.AI has declared bankruptcy as part of a deal that lets Disney hire most of its staff, including former chief executive officer Karandeep Anand, and potentially acquire most of its technology. Court filings suggest the deal also lets Disney avoid the startup's legal liabilities. Character.AI faces private lawsuits over chatbot safety and investigations by regulators worldwide. Its new chief executive officer said the bankruptcy aims to reach a "consensual resolution" with personal injury claimants and a group of investigating states. Whatever remains of Character.AI appears to keep responsibility for those cases. In the first transaction, in September, Disney paid $5.5 million plus a refundable $2 million "good faith deposit." Disney declined to comment.

Disney to pay $60M a year for 66 Character.AI staff as the startup files for bankruptcy

Disney plans to pay $60 million a year to 66 employees of Character.AI, an AI chatbot startup that has filed for bankruptcy, according to a Chapter 11 filing. It will also set aside $30 million for a retention pool and expects to spend $180 million on compensation and retention over three years. Of the 66 staff offered jobs, 56 have resigned from Character.AI. The other 10 are waiting for US work visa updates. Disney also agreed to pay $20 million for key Character.AI assets, including some intellectual property and technology. Rival bids are open until November 20, and a bankruptcy court judge will oversee the process. In September, Disney hired Character.AI chief executive officer Karandeep Anand as its first company-wide tech chief. The hires came two weeks after Disney laid off several hundred workers.

Character.AI files for bankruptcy after Google's $2.7B "reverse acquihire" of its founders

Character.AI, the AI companion startup that peaked at 28 million monthly active users, is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 2024, Google paid $2.7 billion to hire its founders and key staff and license its technology, but did not buy the company. Such "reverse acquihires" have happened at least six times in two years with AI startups. The shrunken company shifted from costly large language model training to building AI characters, but struggled to make money from its users. It also faced lawsuits over alleged harm to minors and copyright concerns from Disney. Disney is set to pick over parts of the company for $20 million.

Character.AI files for bankruptcy as Disney bids $20M for its assets

Character.AI, the chatbot startup once valued at $1 billion, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. It seeks a court-supervised sale of its assets and will shut down if no buyer keeps the service running. Disney Worldwide Services has signed on as the lead bidder, offering $20 million for non-exclusive perpetual licences to certain intellectual property and some legal claims, plus transitional services from former employees. Other bidders can still top the offer. The sale is expected to close in late November or early December. The company cited legal and regulatory pressure, monthly operating losses of $8 million to $9 million, and trouble raising capital. It estimated its assets and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. The app remains online.

Character.AI files for bankruptcy, with Disney as $20M opening bidder for key assets

Character.AI, the chatbot startup founded by former Google researchers, has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware. The California-based company is seeking a court-supervised sale of all or substantially all of its assets, which it expects to finish by late November or early December. Disney Worldwide Services, an affiliate of the Walt Disney Company, is the opening bidder for a non-exclusive, perpetual licence to certain Character.AI intellectual property and claims. Disney would pay $20 million and provide transition services using former Character.AI employees it has hired. Other buyers can still bid higher. The platform stays online during the sale. If no bid is enough to keep it running, Character.AI will wind down the service. The company has faced lawsuits from families who alleged its chatbots harmed teenagers' mental health. It did not say what led to the filing.
