Requirements
  • Senior generalist experience spanning web, data, infrastructure, and artificial intelligence, with the ability to learn unfamiliar technology stacks quickly.
  • Production experience handling money, including payment integrations, payouts, reconciliation, or fraud work, with familiarity with failure modes.
  • Experience as the only engineer or clear technical owner of a significant system, including design, build, deployment, on-call, and customer communication during incidents.
  • Deep PostgreSQL experience, including data modeling, querying, performance tuning, and running migrations against large tables without downtime.
  • Production experience shipping large language model features involving retrieval, tool use, evaluations, and guardrails; prototypes do not count.
  • Experience improving engineering processes by introducing trunk-based development, automated testing, and disciplined environments while continuing to ship.
  • Ability to distinguish technical debt that has material cost from debt that is primarily cosmetic.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails 7, Ruby 3.1, HAML, SCSS, Bootstrap, jQuery, Delayed Job, Braintree, PayPal, Dwolla, Stripe, Heroku, Amazon S3, Redis, Postmark, Honeybadger, New Relic, Datadog, and PostHog.
Responsibilities
  • Set the product and engineering roadmap with the general manager, product team, and customers by translating business priorities into a sequenced plan and explaining tradeoffs.
  • Manage donation payments, automatic payouts, and reconciliation across multiple payment providers, including retries, idempotency, webhooks, and degraded-provider scenarios.
  • Move artificial intelligence capabilities from planning to production using evaluations, guardrails, and tenant-safe tool use, while choosing between foundation models and deterministic pipelines.
  • Use coding agents as part of daily development work.
  • Establish trunk-based development, functioning continuous integration, a staging environment using synthetic data, feature flags, meaningful test coverage, and a reliable deployment process.
  • Document the codebase, tests, and systems so future engineers can take over quickly.
  • Handle fraud detection, device fingerprinting, and abuse prevention to protect donors and schools.
  • Monitor cloud and vendor spending, identify waste, and evaluate whether cost reductions justify the engineering effort.
  • Work directly with operators, school administrators, and partners.
  • Own alerting, uptime, incident response, on-call operations, and follow-up work to prevent recurring outages.
