Requirements
  • A quantitatively oriented advanced degree, such as a degree in epidemiology, statistics, economics, public health, nutrition, or a related field.
  • Substantial professional experience relevant to nutrition, including experience in nutrition programming, agriculture or food systems affecting nutrition outcomes, research, program design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, grantmaking, impact investing, or other work addressing malnutrition.
Responsibilities
  • Create and lead ambitious research agendas related to GiveWell’s nutrition portfolios and answer complex questions that inform grantmaking decisions.
  • Communicate externally about research and mentor and advise other researchers on the team.
  • Combine empirical evidence review and critical synthesis, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, broader contextual understanding, and independent judgment.
  • Tackle research questions concerning real-world program performance, coverage gaps, program quality, and the evidence on vitamin A supplementation and treatment of acute malnutrition.
  • Design impact evaluations for new and existing programs and supervise researchers conducting that work from research-question scoping through results interpretation and model integration.
  • Build the evidence base in new programmatic areas by synthesizing existing research, commissioning new research, and funding primary data collection where appropriate.
  • Determine whether new interventions meet GiveWell’s cost-effectiveness bar and are ready for major grantmaking.
  • Support grantmakers by stress-testing cost-effectiveness-model assumptions, incorporating new data, and identifying uncertainty that warrants further investigation.
  • Shape a major annual grantmaking portfolio and own grant investigations end to end, from research question through grant recommendation.
  • Represent GiveWell to external counterparts and propose new areas of work.
  • Attend international site visits and conferences when required, averaging one to two trips per year, and attend quarterly organization-wide and department retreats when possible.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in clinical nutrition research, epidemiological modeling, or health economics modeling.
  • Experience designing and implementing programs or conducting monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in grantmaking or impact investing.
  • Experience in public-sector, private-sector, or nonprofit organizations addressing malnutrition.

GiveWell is a nonprofit research organization that identifies and recommends charities working in global health and poverty alleviation based on how much good they do per dollar. Founded in 2007, it evaluates programs by gathering independent evidence, building cost-effectiveness models, interviewing staff, conducting site visits, and monitoring results, producing over 70,000 hours of research a year. It publishes a short annual list of top charities plus detailed reports and offers donation funds—Top Charities, All Grants, and Unrestricted—while charging no fees to donors or charities. What sets GiveWell apart is its transparent methodology and openness, including publishing its own mistakes and making all research freely available. The goal is to help donors do as much good as possible, having directed over $2.6 billion to recommended organizations and, by its estimate, helped save more than 340,000 lives.

What believers are saying

  • July 2026 updates say GiveWell already exceeded 2025 grants and targets $1 billion this year.
  • June 2026 hiring spans research, grants, and operations, signaling expansion across every function.
  • AMF received a $96.3 million GiveWell grant in 2025, proving scalable deployment remains strong.

What critics are saying

  • Coefficient Giving now dominates funding; withdrawal would slash 2026 grantmaking and staff growth.
  • USAID cuts distorted GiveWell’s pipeline in 2025; funding a few programs risks concentration.
  • AI-era donors can bypass GiveWell; if recommendations lose edge, its relevance erodes fast.

What makes GiveWell unique

  • GiveWell directs evidence-based global health grants, reaching $418 million in 2025.
  • Its marginal-cost-effectiveness threshold and open RFPs, like July 2026 water funding, sharpen capital allocation.
  • Coefficient Giving’s $1 billion 2026 commitment validates GiveWell’s brand and sourcing power.
