Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in West Virginia or the applicable state where services will be performed.
  • Board certification or recertification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Maintain patient safety and confidentiality, follow the scope of delineated clinical privileges, and take precautions to minimize infection risks.
  • Maintain airway-management expertise and familiarity with airway adjuncts, including Bullard laryngoscopes, fiberoptic scopes, and ILMA devices.
  • Be able to perform anesthesia procedures, including intravenous and invasive monitoring catheter insertion, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures for arterial blood gas interpretation.
  • Be able to recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medication, or therapy and initiate corrective measures and resuscitative care as needed.
  • Be able to review informed-consent documentation, identify the appropriate surgical site, and participate in the surgical pause in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards.
  • Be able to maintain controlled-substance accountability in accordance with department and hospital policy and state and federal guidelines.
  • Be able to see details at close range and maintain composure in high-stress situations.
  • Be reliable, responsible, dependable, able to fulfill obligations, open to workplace changes and variety, and able to work congenially with people with differing abilities, personalities, and interests.
  • Follow standardized safety guidelines for exposure to infectious disease, hazardous compounds, radiation, needle-stick risks, sterilizing chemicals, anesthetics, and patient-moving hazards.
  • Be available for on-call work and possible night, weekend, or holiday shifts.
Responsibilities
  • Provide anesthetic care for patients undergoing all types of procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during surgery and procedures, and continuously observe patients' responses to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents; inform the surgeon or anesthesiologist of adverse conditions that may threaten patient safety or care.
  • Participate in pre-anesthetic patient evaluations and select anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Carry out the anesthetic plan, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases; manage induction, maintenance, and emergence; determine when additional laboratory tests are needed; and evaluate and manage patients in the immediate postoperative period.
  • Administer intravenous fluids in consideration of the patient's medical history and surgical procedure; administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Document patient status appropriately in the anesthesia record.
  • Perform required safety and performance checks on anesthesia equipment and verify supplies before care; procure and assemble equipment and supplies when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
  • Communicate appropriately with individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
  • Provide anesthesia care in the absence of an anesthesiologist during a life-threatening emergency.
  • Assist with teaching and evaluating newly hired CRNAs, graduate registered nurse anesthetists, and student registered nurse anesthetists in the clinical area.
