Requirements
- A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing registered nurse license or multistate license is required, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
- A minimum associate degree is required.
- The ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English is required.
- Required within six months of the start date, where applicable: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support; Pediatric Advanced Life Support; Trauma Nursing Core Course; Neonatal Resuscitation; Intermediate Fetal Monitoring; and cardiac monitoring qualifications.
- International registered nurses must hold or be able to obtain a current approved Alabama Board of Nursing registered nurse license or multistate license.
- International registered nurses must hold current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training or obtain it within 30 days of starting.
- The role requires clear and accurate communication, delegation, conflict management, working under time pressure, and the ability to work in groups.
- The role requires physical presence onsite, prolonged standing and walking, the ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects, and the ability to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- The role requires stamina to work prolonged shifts, with every other weekend required.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervise licensed practical nurses, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
- Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
- Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
- Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
- Apply safety principles when performing care.
- Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
- Assist with performance-improvement activities, including serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
- Perform initial and annual competency assessments for the applicable job class.
- Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
- Identify and reduce unsafe practices and recognize and address risks and hazards affecting patients, visitors, and employees.
- Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
