OpenEvidence embeds AI clinical search in Northwestern Medicine's Epic health records

Northwestern Medicine and OpenEvidence, an AI-powered medical search and clinical decision-support platform, have announced a collaboration to embed OpenEvidence directly in the electronic health record (EHR). Since October 8, clinicians at the Chicago health system can launch the tool from Epic, signed in automatically with their hospital credentials. Nurses, pharmacists and other clinical staff get access for the first time. Users can check medication dosing and drug interactions, review guidelines, and get cited answers drawn from peer-reviewed literature, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the JAMA Network. The enterprise-wide rollout is the first phase of a broader effort to ensure AI is used safely at the bedside. Northwestern Medicine runs 11 hospitals and more than 200 diagnostic and ambulatory sites.

Can you live longer for $5,500? Longevity clinics are the buzzy new trend at nonprofit hospitals.

Can you live longer for $5,500? Longevity clinics are the buzzy new trend at nonprofit hospitals. Northwestern Medicine, Weill Cornell, and Mayo Clinic have all launched cash-pay longevity clinics. Oct. 6, 2026 Todd underwent longevity assessments at hospital clinics in two states for this story, measuring the health trajectories of her heart, brain, lungs, eyes, ears, and more, as well as her strength and fitness. This is Part 1 of Selling Longevity, which examines the science of longevity and the risk of jumping ahead of research in search of profits. CCHICAGO - I was walking briskly on a steep treadmill, wearing a mask that evoked the villain Bane from "Batman." Prince crooned back-handed compliments over an iPad speaker to keep my energy up, promising I had to be neither rich nor cool to be his girl. Every so often, the woman standing next to me asked me to point at the color-coded sheet ranking my state of exertion from 1 (roughly, "I could do this all day") to 10 ("I not only hate this but am about to keel over if you don't slow this thing down"). The goal was to get to 10. Pushing myself to achieve difficult physical goals does not come naturally. I can't go on, I thought. I went on. This was the VO2 Max test, which shows how efficiently the body uses oxygen ("V" stands for volume, "O2" for oxygen) and is considered medicine's most accurate measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. It was the last in a barrage of assessments I'd undertaken at a shiny longevity clinic affiliated with Northwestern University - part of a $5,500 annual package. The quest to defeat the indignities of aging has long provoked costly and questionable practices, from the 1920s doctors who believed in the rejuvenating power of grafted monkey testicles to Bryan Johnson's since-abandoned blood transfusions from his teenage son. Now some of the nation's most prestigious health systems are jumping into the growing business of longevity. They promise a rigorous scientific approach to helping people preserve their youthful vigor for as long as they can, with assessments that give patients more detailed pictures of their current physical conditions and aging trajectories than they'd get at a typical doctor's visit. Some critics, however, question how to reconcile the clinics' high out-of-pocket costs with hospitals' nonprofit status and charitable missions, and warn that in their zeal to attract paying customers, they're offering tests that lack sufficient evidence showing they actually improve people's health. * Sarah Todd Reporter, Commercial Determinants of Health Sarah covers how industries like food and tobacco affect Americans' bodies and minds. Naomi Herman (17 | Chicago, Illinois).

Naomi Herman (17 | Chicago, Illinois). Everyday young hero 8.27.26. Naomi Herman. Before Naomi Herman (17 | Chicago, Illinois) was born, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and the disease has impacted her family tremendously ever since. Naomi is grateful for all the help they have received and is dedicated to paying it forward. She started Carrying Hope, a philanthropic service organization dedicated to bringing comfort and joy to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in the Chicagoland area. They realize that many times patients are alone in their cancer journey and that a small personal gift during this difficult time goes a long way. Naomi and her team of volunteers provide thoughtfully curated tote bags filled with essential items for patients undergoing chemotherapy, supporting them throughout their treatment journey. To date, Carrying Hope has raised $10,000 and has delivered more than 400 essential supply bags to patients at five hospitals. In June 2026, Carrying Hope partnered with Northwestern Medicine's 2026 Cancer Survivors' Celebration Walk and 5k, making them the official participant tote bag provider for Chicago's biggest cancer survivor walk. Carrying Hope provided filled totes to 150 VIP survivors and 3,500 reusable bags to all participants. Carrying Hope's letter writing and bag stuffing events bring together teens from at least 10 middle and high schools in Chicago. Naomi has a whole team of classmates that fundraise and meet regularly to produce the bags that they hand out to the patients. Many of her team has been touched by someone with cancer so this endeavor is personal to all of them. Their generosity, positivity and hard work is infectious within the community. As the word spreads about their mission their team has continued to grow. Carrying Hope just received nonprofit status and has raised an additional $10,000 in the week after the announcement. They have also been asked to supply 300 care bags to Northwestern Medicine's Survive and Thrive Gynecologic Cancer Patient Program in September.

Applications now open for third class of Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare Accelerator. August 24, 2026 Northwestern Medicine and Techstars have opened applications for the third class of their Healthcare Accelerator, inviting six health tech startups to join a three-month program in Chicago starting March 2027. CHICAGO - Northwestern Medicine and Techstars today announced that applications are now open for the third class of the Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare Accelerator. Building on the success of prior classes, this year's program aims to attract another cohort of six exceptional health tech startups. Participants will benefit from three months of immersive, in-person support at Northwestern Medicine's Mansueto Innovation Institute in Chicago, gaining access to funding, mentorship, and collaboration with clinical and technical experts. The previous two classes delivered powerful innovations, including solutions like automated healthcare compliance, optimized medical coding, AI-powered pathogen analysis, and cutting-edge digital therapeutics. These startups showcased their pitch and progress at a high-impact Demo Day last summer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in front of a packed auditorium. Several companies from the 2026 class are rapidly gaining momentum following the program. Slideflow Labs, a company that develops in-house AI biomarker tests, recently finished first and secured funding in the University of Chicago Polsky Center's New Venture Challenge earlier this summer, less than a week after Demo Day. "The program connected us with the right mix of clinical, technical, and operational partners to pressure-test our thinking at every level," said Akhil Chakravarti, co-founder and CEO of Slideflow Labs. "That feedback has strengthened our company and refined our path to market. We're thankful for the time and access the program afforded us." Verbal, a company focused on auditing patient interactions with clinicians and AI agents, recently closed their seed round and is already integrating with health systems around the country. "Techstars pushed us on how we build the company as a whole. Northwestern Medicine sharpened our positioning, our value proposition, and our path to customers. The combination was powerful, and we're grateful for it," said Waleed Mohsen, co-founder and CEO of Verbal. "This accelerator brings together Northwestern Medicine's clinical expertise and Techstars' entrepreneurial network to help promising companies solve real problems in health care," said Hannah Koczka, vice president, NM Ventures and Innovation. "By giving startups direct access to clinicians, operators and technology leaders, we can help advance practical innovations that improve the patient experience, support our teams and strengthen Chicago's role as a center for health care innovation." "The incredible progress of our alumni shows that we are building something very special here," said Brad Schnitzer, Managing Director of the program. "By giving these founders unparalleled access to Northwestern Medicine's world-class team and Techstars' network, we are accelerating the pace of healthcare innovation. I can't wait to meet the next class and get to work." Key dates. * Application Opens: August 24, 2026 * Program Duration: March 8 to June 3, 2027 * Demo Day: June 3, 2027 About Northwestern Medicine & Techstars Healthcare Accelerator. A pioneering collaboration, the accelerator combines Northwestern Medicine's healthcare leadership with Techstars' world-class startup infrastructure, now entering its third class.
