Requirements
  • High school graduation or a GED certificate.
  • Graduation from a technical school as a Medical Assistant or equivalent.
  • Current CPR certification must be obtained within the first six months of hire and maintained.
  • Knowledge of patient interviewing techniques, basic medical terminology, vital signs and abnormal values, patient charting, exam room maintenance, provider orders, medication administration, basic laboratory procedures, electrocardiograms, OSHA guidelines, blood-borne pathogens, and universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of insurance, coding, and billing terminology; instrument care and classification; sterilization and disposal procedures; injections; medications; specimen collection; urinalysis; and 12-lead electrocardiogram procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and interpret basic vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, height, weight, and temperature.
  • Ability to obtain throat culture swabs and operate medical, laboratory, office, telephone, and computer equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families, follow provider instructions, work within established deadlines, resolve patient concerns, maintain confidentiality, and follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to read computer monitor output and basic medical test results accurately and communicate clearly for work and safety compliance.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the patient care team with preparing patient visits and providing clinical and clerical support.
  • Use the practice management program to register, schedule, and verify appointments.
  • Review the next day's schedule, prepare for patient visits, verify insurance, explain fees, collect required co-payments, and greet patients and visitors.
  • Bring patients to examination rooms, collect lab results and outside records, print labels, prepare encounter forms and charting notes, schedule referrals, and mail results.
  • Interview patients, record visit reasons and health problems, obtain medical histories, and document subjective and objective information.
  • Obtain vital signs and report abnormal readings to the provider.
  • Follow universal precautions and maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with policies and HIPAA.
  • Complete lab requisitions, label specimens, perform in-house tests, and assist with specimen collection.
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures, including visual examinations and electrocardiograms.
  • Prepare, clean, and sanitize examination rooms; maintain rooms with forms and supplies.
  • Clean, wrap, and label instruments for autoclaving and care for disposable and non-disposable instruments.
  • Administer medications through approved routes after required training and provider or licensed-health-professional sign-off.
  • Perform subcutaneous and intramuscular immunizations after completing the required class and receiving sign-off.
  • Serve as an interpreter when appropriate and explain discharge plans to patients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
