Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- The candidate must be a graduate of a nurse assistant or patient care technician training program, complete a hospital-based Patient Care Technician program within 30 days of hire, be a current nursing student, or have three years of patient care technician experience.
- The employee must be able to perform heavy or hard work requiring strength or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.
- The employee must work closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased patients, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- The employee must be able to communicate effectively with staff and patients and adapt to changing environments.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the provision of patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
- Follow the established plan of patient care.
- Assist with patient admission, transfer, discharge, and transportation.
- Implement patient safety measures, including securing patients for transport, assisting with movement and ambulation, raising side rails, implementing restraint alternatives and fall protocols under nursing direction, keeping call lights within reach, and applying Lead II monitor leads.
- Collect and record vital signs as instructed by the nurse.
- Collect and prepare urine, stool, and sputum specimens and glucometer results according to policy, and record results in the patient chart.
- Administer patient care and treatments as instructed by the nurse, including weights, enemas, bathing, perineal care, catheter care, oral hygiene, hot or cold compresses, urine straining, T.P.R. and blood pressures, intake and output, ambulation, turning and positioning, Sitz baths, pre-operative and post-operative care, post-mortem care, assistive devices, braces and equipment, traction setup and application, 12-lead electrocardiograms, and oral suctioning with a Yankauer catheter.
- Perform basic routine duties, including distributing fresh water, disposing of soiled linen, maintaining a clean and orderly unit, stocking supplies, using clean and sterile technique, maintaining Body Substance Isolation, and locating equipment and supplies.
- Provide age-appropriate care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients by understanding growth and development, identifying age-specific needs, reporting patient status to the nurse, and providing appropriate treatment.
- Perform food and nutritional duties, including distributing snacks and supplements, maintaining fluid restrictions, assisting with meals, completing caloric counts, recording meal percentages, and passing and collecting trays.
- Perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram within one hour of a physician's order while maintaining patient dignity and privacy and placing electrodes correctly.
- Complete daily documentation.
- Provide care for respite and hospice patients.
- Maintain professional two-way communication by keeping the nurse informed, establishing rapport with personnel, patients, and families, explaining tasks, and providing emotional support.
- Complete required in-services and educational programs.
- Attend and actively participate in at least three staff meetings annually.
- Maintain proficiency, competence, and current knowledge in patient care.
- Identify areas for self-improvement and write goals on the performance appraisal.
- Respond immediately to patient signal lights and notify the nurse of patient problems.
- Provide patient care that promotes or enhances quality of life.
- Immediately report patient observations, requests, and unusual signs or symptoms to the charge nurse or team leader.
- Support and adhere to hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
- Institute emergency measures calmly and effectively.
- Report safety or risk-management problems to the charge nurse or appropriate hospital personnel.
- Document technical skills performed and observations in the medical record.
- Provide appropriate educational information to patients and their significant others throughout the hospital stay.
- Assist with the preceptorship program when required.
Desired Qualifications
- Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is preferred.
- One year of clinical experience is preferred.
