Requirements
  • A degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Significant and demonstrated experience in power generation, systems design, development, and operation of control systems is required.
  • Experience in Verification and Validation of HVDC Control Systems is required.
  • Competence in HVDC Control, Protection, Sequencing Strategy, and HVDC Dynamic Performance Studies is required.
  • Competence in PSCAD, MATLAB-SIMULINK, and RTDS applications is required.
  • The candidate must proactively serve on cross-functional leadership teams and make decisions independently.
  • Knowledge of Control and Protection cubicle circuit diagrams, field cabling, protection relays, HV/MV/LV switchgear, IEDs, and distributed control systems is required.
  • Knowledge of Test-Driven Design techniques, including Continuous Integration, Unit Testing, and Automated Regression Testing, is required.
  • Competence in Requirements Management and Test Traceability Matrix is required.
  • Knowledge of Change Control and issue tracking, including CCB and Jira, is required.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills and fluency in English are required.
  • The candidate must understand and communicate customer requirements, own technical discussions with customers, and develop client relationships.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and tactical direction for Verification and Validation of HVDC Control and Protection Systems in collaboration with Grid and HVDC technology groups.
  • Establish processes to assess, review, and record the testing needs and boundaries of each project so the control system is verified to the maximum extent possible before leaving the factory.
  • Lead the generation of plans, procedures, and specifications for Integration System Tests, Full System Tests, Factory Acceptance Tests, and Commissioning Tests at site.
  • Develop, maintain, and prepare Test Management Plans and Solutions.
  • Coordinate HVDC testing and validation process steps from lab testing through factory system testing and site system testing leading to customer acceptance of the HVDC Control and Protection System.
  • Maintain a clear overview of HVDC NTI-NPI-Project life cycles to de-risk product development by defining the testing needs required to validate requirements.
  • Provide technical validation of processes and test specifications.
  • Define and execute Continuous Improvement for the Verification and Validation department in collaboration with other HVDC Control and Protection Engineering teams.
  • Ensure sufficient de-risking is included in product plans so quality problems due to the introduction of new technologies are avoided when the technologies are deployed on projects.
  • Enforce engineering discipline, established processes, company policies, quality procedures, and work instructions through activities such as training and technical reviews.
  • Review the Verification and Validation department's skills, identify shortfalls and skills gaps, and ensure necessary training, guidance, and mentoring of engineers is in place.
  • Serve as approver for technical reviews and quality gates or project milestones.
  • Lead the Verification and Validation team to identify opportunities for new intellectual property development.
  • Lead and mentor the Verification and Validation team in customer communications to define quality and testing expectations from project kick-off through final sign-off.
  • Develop and mentor Verification and Validation team members so they can represent the business in industry working groups as key content contributors.
  • Define strategies and roadmaps for the development of new engineers in the department.

GE Vernova secures $6M state funding for $96M energy research centre in Niskayuna

GE Vernova has secured an additional $6 million in state funding for its $96 million Advanced Research Center on Balltown Road in Niskayuna, New York. The grant, awarded through the FAST NY programme, will fund water supply, road and stormwater management upgrades at the campus, offsetting roughly half of the $12 million in required infrastructure improvements. The company previously received $9.6 million in state tax credits linked to plans for creating 75 new jobs at the research centre, along with low-cost hydropower allocation. The site, separate from GE Vernova's existing River Road labs, will house energy technology research including a direct air capture carbon system currently under testing. GE Vernova earned nearly $5 billion in 2025 on $38 billion in revenue, with a market value of $242 billion.

ThinkLabs raises $28M USD Series A to help power grids handle AI data centre demand

ThinkLabs has raised $28 million USD ($39 million CAD) in a Series A round led by Energy Impact Partners to help power grids manage surging demand from AI data centres. Nvidia's venture fund NVentures and Edison International participated, alongside returning investors including GE Vernova. The Canadian-led, New York-based startup provides physics-informed AI software that creates digital twins of power grids, simulating scenarios to help operators maintain reliability and reduce outages. The platform reduces what would typically be a six-month, quarter-million-dollar study to under a day's analysis. Founded by former Toronto Hydro smart-grid department head Josh Wong, ThinkLabs spun out of GE Vernova in early 2024 with $6.8 million CAD in seed funding. The company will use the new capital to mature its product and expand features whilst focusing on the North American market.

Trump and Japan unveil up to $40B US nuclear reactor plan

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have unveiled a US-Japan energy investment plan potentially worth $40 billion, centring on small modular nuclear reactors. GE Vernova and Hitachi will develop BWRX-300 reactors in Tennessee and Alabama, whilst Japan will invest up to $33 billion in natural gas plants in Pennsylvania and Texas. The initiative forms part of a broader $550 billion bilateral investment fund agreed under a recent trade pact. It aims to address rising electricity demand from data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure. However, most SMR designs await regulatory approval and none have been deployed on US grids. The agreement also covers critical minerals and industrial supply chains, with Japanese firms contributing components and participating in rare-earth projects across Indiana, Arizona and North Carolina.
