Tatu City launches After-School Artificial Intelligence Program

Tatu City launches After-School Artificial Intelligence program. Tatu City, Kenya, 22 October 2025 - Tatu City, Africa's leading new city on Nairobi's doorstep, has officially launched its After-School Artificial Intelligence (AI) Program under Tatu Reach, the city's Environmental, Social and Governance initiative, while celebrating the graduation of the first cohort of students, participants in the pilot phase, who completed a 13-week course in front-end web development and artificial intelligence. The program, designed for learners aged 14 - 15, introduces students to digital literacy and coding fundamentals, covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and real-world applications through capstone projects. At least twenty students from Tatu Primary School, a public school within Tatu City, were selected for the inaugural training, where they gained practical experience in coding, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. "At Tatu City, we are preparing our community for the jobs of the future," said Solomon Mahinda, Executive Vice President, Tatu City. "Our After-School AI Program equips young learners with digital skills that will enable them to participate in tomorrow's economy. Tatu City has also cemented its status as East Africa's data centre hub, with several companies setting up large-scale facilities that will create hundreds of skilled jobs and enhance Kenya's position as a regional leader in digital infrastructure. We want the surrounding community to be ready for the opportunities that will emerge right here at Tatu City." The event was presided over by officials from the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MoICDE), in line with the Ministry's mission to promote digital skills, innovation, and access to technology as drivers of socio-economic transformation across Kenya. The success of the After-School AI Program has been made possible through partners who provided the curriculum, tutors, and essential equipment such as computers, including Qhala, a digital innovation company; Power Learn Project Africa, a Pan-African organization focused on empowering youth through technology education; Ngeda, a leading provider of technology training and mentorship; Viking Cruises, a global leader in river, ocean, and expedition voyages; and CCI Global, Africa's largest business process outsourcing company. Since 2023, the Tatu City Training Academy has provided free vocational training to more than 600 community members in masonry, plumbing, steel fixing, and security. The addition of the AI program marks a deliberate shift toward future-focused, technology-driven education that bridges the digital divide and builds digital capacity among young learners. Tatu Reach's broader impact on education and community empowerment continues to grow. Programs such as the school feeding initiative, which has provided more than two million nutrient-dense meals to learners across public schools in the community, and Tatu Rugby, which provides life skills and sports coaching, reflect Tatu City's holistic approach to nurturing young people through education, wellness, and mentorship. Tatu City, one of seven cities developed by Rendeavour, welcomes more than 25,000 people daily who live, work, and study within its dynamic community. The city has attracted over KES 400 billion in investment, with businesses including Emirates Logistics, Heineken, Cold Solutions, FullCare Medical, Hounen, CCI Global, Dormans, Kärcher, Naivas, NCBA, Grit Real Estate Income Group, Hewatele, Freight Forwarders Solutions, Tamarind Group, ADvTECH, Friendship Group, Bakels, Novis, and Davis & Shirtliff.

Why Businesses are Migrating from Industrial Area to Tatu City SEZ

Why businesses are migrating from Industrial Area to Tatu City SEZ. More and more companies are making the shift from Nairobi's long-established Industrial Area to Tatu City Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The trend reflects both the rising costs and inefficiencies in Nairobi and the opportunities that SEZs- like Tatu City - are opening up for businesses that want to scale across Kenya and into the wider region. For decades, the Industrial Area has been the heartbeat of manufacturing and logistics. But today, it faces significant pressure. Land has become extremely expensive, averaging around KShs 130 million per acre, making it hard for businesses to expand. Space is also limited, and companies often contend with unreliable infrastructure and long bureaucratic processes. These realities are pushing firms to look for better alternatives that support growth, efficiency, and regional integration. Tatu City, licensed in 2015 as Kenya's first mixed-use SEZ, has positioned itself as that alternative. The development sits on 5,000 acres and offers affordable land, reliable utilities, and modern infrastructure. Additionally, the SEZ framework comes with preferential incentives such as reduced corporate taxes, duty exemptions, and a one-stop shop for business registration, that cut down the time and costs of setting up operations. So far, more than 100 companies have invested in Tatu City, with local firms accounting for about 70% of them. The zone covers 10 sectors, from ICT and agriculture to pharmaceuticals and logistics. It has drawn in big names like Fullcare, the world's third-largest government medical producer, alongside logistics players who benefit from Eastern and Central Africa's first 50,000-square-meter Grade A warehousing facility. Recently, Airtel signed a deal to establish a 44-megawatt data center at Tatu, underlining the SEZ's growing role as a hub for digital infrastructure. Location is another advantage. Tatu City sits within easy reach of Nairobi's Inland Container Depot, just a 30-minute drive away, which makes it efficient for imports and exports. Utilities are far more reliable than in the city. Electricity- 95% of it renewable- and water supply are guaranteed, allowing operations to run smoothly. Importantly, businesses also have the flexibility to design and build their own facilities at a fraction of Nairobi land costs, giving them space to grow at their own pace. The impact is already clear. Tatu City has created 25,000 jobs to date and is expected to eventually house around 250,000 residents while integrating local value chains across industries. It is steadily becoming not just a business hub, but also a driver of Kenya's broader economic transformation, linking investment, employment, and urban development. The migration from Nairobi's Industrial Area to Tatu City is part of a wider shift towards SEZs globally. These zones are designed to attract investment, create jobs, and test new policy frameworks in a way that traditional industrial centers cannot always do. For Kenyan businesses with regional ambitions, Tatu City offers a springboard into Eastern and Central Africa. While some firms remain cautious, often because of limited knowledge of SEZ benefits, momentum is building. With its mix of affordable land, dependable infrastructure, and enabling policies, Tatu City is proving to be more than just an alternative to Nairobi, it is emerging as a blueprint for how Kenya can position itself in the global investment landscape.
