Responsibilities
  • Support the development and implementation of agency-wide strategies, standards, tools, and best practices for cash and market-based programming that engage partners, donors, and governments, and help ensure cross-sectoral integration of gender, protection mainstreaming, and disaster risk reduction.
  • Provide programmatic and operational, including administrative and finance, technical solutions to Country Program teams remotely and on-site for strategic planning and application of standards, best practices, partnership principles, tools, and monitoring and evaluation to support high-quality implementation.
  • Contribute to and, in some cases, lead technical design for proposals; support preparation, design, submission, and approval of project concepts and full proposals; act as a technical writer on proposal development teams as needed; and advise project teams on integrating donor strategies, priorities, and technical requirements into CRS approaches.
  • Support capacity-strengthening initiatives for staff and partners in cash and market-based programming by helping develop learning and training strategies, agendas, and curricula, and by conducting trainings, workshops, and coaching.
  • Collect and analyze program data, capture and share lessons learned and best practices for projects, facilitate improvements in decision-making, and contribute to the cash and market-based programming learning agenda.
  • Contribute to maintaining relationships with donors, peer organizations, research and other institutions; participate in cash and market-based programming forums to collect and share best practices and promote CRS work.
  • Support Country Programs and partners in strengthening cash readiness through targeted technical support, including developing capacities, identifying suitable cash delivery mechanisms and Financial Service Providers, developing Standard Operating Procedures and tools, and supporting the design and implementation of pilot cash programs.

Patrick McCarthy, a former videographer for Catholic Relief Services, has joined the communications department of the Archdiocese of Baltimore as video/digital content coordinator. He will serve as the first full-time videographer for the archdiocese and Catholic Review Media. McCarthy has a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is a parishioner of St. Louis in Clarksville. Jenna Mattern, a recent graduate of Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore who served in an editing role with her college newspaper, is the new digital content coordinator for Catholic Review Media. The New Jersey native is a parishioner of Sacred Heart in Glyndon. Kelly Snyder, a graduate of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is the new web administrator for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She also assists at the Catholic Review. She is a parishioner of St. Joseph in Fullerton. Holly Neal is communications director for the Diocese of Lexington/Cross Roads. Nepal continues search-and-rescue operations as hundreds remain dead and more than 800 people are unaccounted for, with India, China and other international institutions also supporting relief efforts. August 28, 2026 15:53 IST Apple CEO Tim Cook on Friday expressed solidarity with people affected by the devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-Tibet border, saying the company will make a donation to support relief and rebuilding efforts, as US President Donald Trump said Washington had offered Nepal any assistance it needed. The disaster began on Wednesday after an ice-rock avalanche in the Tibetan region triggered a massive surge of water and debris in the transboundary Bhote Koshi River, causing widespread destruction and killing hundreds of people. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic flash floods and mudslides in Nepal and Tibet. Apple is making a donation to support relief and rebuilding efforts on the ground," he stated. Cook did not disclose the amount of Apple's contribution or specify the organisations through which the funds would be channelled. The floods and mudslides have devastated settlements, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure across several districts of Nepal. Hundreds of bodies have reportedly been recovered from areas along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, while more than 800 people remain unaccounted for, including security personnel, tourists and local residents. Foreign nationals, including Indian and American tourists, have also been affected. Nepalese authorities are continuing search, rescue and relief operations, with helicopters being deployed to evacuate stranded people and deliver essential supplies. Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Nepal issued emergency contact numbers to assist Indian nationals affected by the floods. More than 100 Indians were initially reported missing in the affected region, although authorities have continued to verify and update the figures. Meanwhile, Trump said the US had offered Nepal assistance following what he described as a brutal disaster. "We've called Nepal and offered any help that they need," Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. The US State Department said approximately 90 Americans may have been affected by the floods. Three American citizens had been safely rescued in Nepal, while the department said it was not aware of any US citizen deaths as of 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. The US embassies in Nepal and China were working with local tour operators and authorities to assist Americans in the affected areas, while Nepal-led search-and-rescue operations continued. The State Department has deployed a disaster response adviser to the region and is providing $500,000 in emergency assistance through its global award with Catholic Relief Services. The funding will support emergency shelter, relief supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance for flood-hit communities in Nepal. Indian-American lawmakers Raja Krishnamoorthi and Suhas Subramanyam have separately urged the US State Department to intensify efforts to locate missing Americans. Krishnamoorthi called for the use of every available resource to support search-and-rescue operations and assist families awaiting information about their loved ones. Subramanyam said several of his constituents from Northern Virginia were among those affected, including community leaders who had travelled to the Himalayas for spiritual purposes. The Nepal government has declared severely affected areas as disaster crisis-hit zones and launched efforts to restore damaged infrastructure and provide relief to displaced communities. India, China and international institutions have also indicated support for rescue, relief and reconstruction efforts. Nepal remains vulnerable to flash floods, landslides and mudslides during the monsoon season, which generally runs from June to September. Difficult mountain terrain and damaged roads are further complicating rescue operations and medical evacuations. The Nepal-Tibet border region is also used by travellers and pilgrims heading towards Mount Kailash, a sacred site for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bon tradition.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will receive the funding through the State Department's Faith and Community Initiative (FCI) announced Aug. 6, alongside other international aid groups, including World Vision, Compassion International, and Samaritan's Purse. "CRS is so proud to be among the recipients of the new Faith and Community Initiative! We received $50 million in first-year funding to lead programming in Cameroon, Liberia, and Nigeria, working as part of a group of faith-based organizations," CRS spokesperson Brittany Wichtendahl said in a statement to EWTN News. "The funding will help improve hospitals, clinics, and the health networks in rural parts of the countries - where a lot of families have limited access to quality healthcare," she said. "This investment reflects a core strength of CRS' approach: working alongside trusted local Church, Caritas, and faith-based partners that are deeply rooted in the communities they serve." CRS' financial statements show that U.S. government grants routinely constituted 40% to 50% of total revenue in fiscal 2023 to fiscal 2025, and the 2026 federal grants to the U.S.-based international humanitarian nonprofit organization are only a fraction of the government funding CRS previously received. CRS' fiscal 2023 budget totaled $1.3 billion, rising to $1.4 billion in fiscal 2024 before dipping to $1.2 billion in fiscal 2025. The aid CRS is set to receive is part of $850 million the State Department earmarked for distribution among faith-based groups over the course of five years. The State Department also said an additional $570 million will be provided directly to faith-based hospitals and clinics under memorandums of understanding with country governments. The State Department said leveraging faith-based and community-run hospitals and clinics ensures that "at least 80% of resources go toward frontline health services that reach patients and clients while streamlining overhead and management costs, a significant increase from the 35% to 40% of resources that went to frontline health services in historical awards from the State Department." The latest aid package comes after CRS received $235 million in food aid from the State Department for programs in Sudan and Ethiopia in July. CRS, the humanitarian and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, announced July 21 that it had received a $60 million award from the U.S. Department of State. The agency said the funding will enable it to partner with Caritas Cuba - which, like CRS, is part of Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church's global humanitarian network - to provide "emergency food and hygiene supplies to nearly 200,000 households, or more than half a million people," across Cuba. The award will also allow the two agencies to distribute "essential household items - including mattresses and blankets - to another 7,000 people who need them," said CRS in its news release. In a separate media note released the same day, the State Department said two of its officials had joined CRS staff in Miami July 21 "to send off the first flight of humanitarian relief" under Secretary of State Marco Rubio's $100 million commitment in aid to the Cuban people. The State Department said the flight contained "pre-packaged food and hygiene kits for up to 700 Cuban families," with the items set to be delivered by CRS "in partnership with the Catholic Church and Caritas Cuba on the ground." "The direct delivery of humanitarian commodities by local parish representatives in the island will ensure critical U.S. assistance reaches everyday Cubans in need, without any opportunity for regime diversion or theft," said the State Department. Aid to address hunger and basic needs. CRS said the new funding from the State Department "builds on" an "ongoing emergency response" launched by its team and its Caritas Cuba partners in the wake of 2025's Hurricane Melissa. That storm's "impact on infrastructure and essential services was widespread," according to a July 1 situation update from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The IFRC said that storm recovery "has been particularly challenging due to pre-existing structural vulnerabilities and the cumulative effects of prior disasters," such as the 2024 Hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, "from which many communities had not yet fully recovered." "Cuba has faced four consecutive years of significant shocks without a sustained recovery window, contributing to a marked deterioration in socioeconomic conditions," said the IFRC. Disease, along with infant and maternal mortality, has risen on the island, while food, water, healthcare, electricity and fuel resources have plunged. A 2026 U.S. blockade on oil imports to Cuba has intensified the crisis. CRS said in its July 21 press release that "families across the island continue to struggle with worsening food insecurity and hunger, prolonged fuel shortages and limited access to basic services." Sean Callahan, the agency's president and CEO, said families in Cuba face "growing hardship as they struggle to put food on the table, access clean water and meet other basic needs."
