Buc-ee's CEO targets conservative states as chain expands to 58th location in Arkansas

Buc-ee's opened its 58th location in Benton, Arkansas, on 17 August. CEO Arch Aplin III said at the opening ceremony that the travel centre chain is focusing expansion on "conservative, business-friendly states" with strong workforces. "Life's too short to try to build in places that people don't appreciate what you're bringing," Aplin said, appearing alongside Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Senator Tom Cotton. The company opened its first Ohio and Arizona locations this year. It plans to enter Louisiana, Kansas and Wisconsin by the end of 2027. A Murfreesboro, Tennessee location is scheduled to open on 16 November.

Costco's $1.4B membership profit faces risk as 40-basis-point renewal slip could crack its $414B valuation model

Costco reported Q3 fiscal 2026 revenue of $70.5 billion and membership fee income of $1.4 billion, up 10.7%, with a worldwide renewal rate of 89.7%. Those fees generate almost pure operating profit, enabling Costco to cap markups at 14% on national brands while maintaining an 11% blended gross margin. Buc-ee's, the privately held roadside chain, operates on the opposite model. The company reports no public financials, but third-party estimates place non-fuel gross margin near 35%, with proprietary snacks running between 50% and 60% margins. New stores cost an estimated $40 million to $60 million across roughly 30 acres. Costco's model depends on predictable membership renewal. Buc-ee's relies on impulse purchases and high-margin private-label goods.

Buc-ee's faces 15 lawsuits since 2021 as Denver cannabis sales plunge 50% to $273M

Texas-based travel centre giant Buc-ee's is rapidly expanding across the US, bringing lower fuel prices and increased foot traffic to local areas. However, the retailer has also launched aggressive trademark litigation, filing 24 infringement proceedings since 2007, with 15 cases since 2021 alone, often targeting small convenience stores over cartoon animal logos. Meanwhile, Denver's cannabis industry faces severe contraction. Gross annual marijuana sales have plummeted nearly 50%, dropping from a pandemic peak of $514 million in 2020 to $273 million in 2025, according to Denver city records. Licensed business totals have declined sharply across all categories, with medical stores falling from 130 in July 2023 to 82 in August 2026. The contrasting trends highlight the current challenges facing Colorado businesses.

Buc-ee's to open 6 locations in 6 states. See when and where.

Buc-ee's to open 6 locations in 6 states. See when and where. James Powel and Gabe Hauari, USA TODAY Buc-ee's opened its first Arkansas location in Benton on Aug. 17, continuing the beaver-branded travel center's expansion out of its Texas stomping grounds. The location is expected to bring more than 200 jobs to the city and will occupy 74,000 square feet with 120 fueling stations, according to a Buc-ee's news release. It added that the starting wage for employees is "well above minimum wage" but did not specify what it is. Buc-ee's opened its first locations in Ohio and Arizona this year. In 2025, it opened its first location in Virginia and a year earlier, it debuted in Colorado. The company anticipates adding inaugural locations in Louisiana, Kansas and Wisconsin by the end of 2027. The travel center, founded in 1982, has become one of the Lone Star State's most recognized exports. The sprawling gas stations have a cult-like following centered on their preternaturally clean restrooms and unique culinary offerings. The Benton location is 58th Buc-ee's location in the country. Here's where Buc-ee's is slated to open next. Where else is Buc-ee's anticipated to open? Crissy Gonzales, Buc-ee's media coordinator, previously said in an email to USA TODAY that the Murfreesboro, Tennessee location will open on Nov. 16. The company's contact page lists the following locations as opening without specific grand opening dates: 2027. * Ruston, Louisiana * Kansas City, Kansas * Gallaway, Tennessee * St. Lucie, Florida * Boerne, Texas * Monroe County, Georgia 2028. * Mebane, North Carolina * Lafayette, Louisiana 2029 and beyond. * Ocala, Florida: 2029 * West Memphis, Arkansas: 2029 * Oak Grove, Kentucky: 2029 * Hardeeville, South Carolina: 2031 USA TODAY has reached out to Buc-ee's for opening dates for these locations. Buc-ee's draws controversy for lawsuits. Buc-ee's has drawn controversy in recent weeks for a string of lawsuits tied to its trademarks. Most recently, the company sued Beaver's Mini Mart, a small corner store located in the middle of a neighborhood in Beavercreek, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. The Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported that despite the mini mart having no gas pumps and being miles from the nearest interstate, Buc-ee's says its customers may be confused by the mini mart's logo, which features a smiling beaver standing tall next to the store's name in a red-letter font. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has said Buc-ee's should drop its "ridiculous" lawsuit against Beaver's Mini Mart. On the July 26 episode of "Last Week Tonight," Oliver detailed Buc-ee's penchant for suing small businesses whose logos feature cartoon animals, even when they bear very little or no resemblance to Buc-ee's famous - and trademarked - grinning beaver logo.
