About the Job

Requirements

  • Principal Scientist candidates must have a Ph.D. and 3–5+ years of relevant postdoctoral or industry experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or contract research organization environments.
  • Senior Principal Scientist candidates must have a Ph.D. and more than 5 years of industry experience demonstrating successful safety leadership and cross-functional impact within drug discovery and development project teams.
  • Have a proven track record in a drug discovery and development setting, including the ability to identify, prioritize, and de-risk rate-limiting liabilities.
  • Have prior experience working with emerging therapeutic modalities and developing custom preclinical safety strategies.
  • Have a strong mechanistic understanding of safety assessment, cellular pathways, and organ-level physiology relevant to Neuroscience and/or Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic areas.
  • Have working familiarity with advanced in vitro models, microphysiological systems or organ-on-a-chip, induced pluripotent stem cell technologies, high-content phenotypic assays, and multi-omics or transcriptomics.
  • Have demonstrated experience collaborating with computational biologists and predictive modelers to interpret complex datasets.
  • Be proficient with statistical and data visualization tools such as GraphPad Prism, Spotfire, JMP, R, or Python.
  • Be able to lead via influence in a matrixed environment and guide experimental work executed by laboratory technical staff.
  • Have exceptional oral and written communication skills and be able to distill complex mechanistic toxicology data into actionable project-team recommendations.
  • Be willing and able to represent Genentech authoritatively in external scientific working groups and consortia.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary Investigative Toxicology subject matter expert and representative on discovery and early development project teams across the Neuroscience and Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic portfolios.
  • Apply knowledge of drug discovery and development workflows to identify rate-limiting safety liabilities early, define critical-path questions, and influence candidate selection.
  • Partner with Project Team Toxicologists, Discovery Scientists, and Pathologists to guide nonclinical safety strategies and mechanistic de-risking plans.
  • Establish, qualify, and execute hypothesis-driven preclinical safety roadmaps tailored to novel and emerging therapeutic modalities, including advanced biologics, nucleic acid therapies, cell and gene therapies, and multi-specifics.
  • Identify technological gaps and design innovative solutions to characterize on-target and exaggerated pharmacology liabilities in newly established scientific areas.
  • Drive the strategic identification, validation, and implementation of next-generation capability needs for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic safety assessment.
  • Serve as lead scientific strategist, leveraging matrixed support from Investigative Toxicology wet-lab members to design, oversee, and interpret complex experimental studies.
  • Ensure data integrity, electronic laboratory notebook documentation, and publication-ready technical reports.
  • Partner with Model Development, Complex In-Vitro Systems, and Computational Toxicology colleagues to establish translatable, predictive workflows.
  • Co-develop and implement human-relevant cellular systems, including organ-on-a-chip, microphysiological systems, induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cellular models, high-content imaging, and toxicogenomics, to tailor assay platforms to project-specific liabilities.
  • Represent the Investigative Toxicology group and Genentech in external industry, academic, and regulatory consortia, including HESI, IQ Consortium, and NC3Rs.
  • Lead external engagement and publication efforts concerning qualification and regulatory adoption of New Approach Methodologies within the Neuroscience and Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic domains.
