Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Massachusetts Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor or Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor credential is required, including LADC I, LADC II, CADC I, or CADC II.
  • The candidate must have access to an operational and insured vehicle and be willing to use it to transport Persons Served.
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required at employment; the candidate must be at least 21 years old, have held a valid U.S. driver's license for at least six months, maintain a safe driving record, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • The candidate must be able to perform physically active duties, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting at least 25 pounds or using a two-person lift, assisting Persons Served with daily living tasks, and maneuvering through narrow spaces.
  • The candidate must be able to operate a computer and office equipment, communicate with Persons Served, staff, and external representatives, and meet the specified visual abilities.
  • CPR certification is required within the first two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within the first two weeks of hire.
  • MAP certification is required within 150 days of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Screen, assess, and reassess substance use, addiction risk, and addiction treatment needs using the Simple Screening Instrument for Substance Abuse and other assessments.
  • Develop formulations addressing substance use level and risk, current substance or addictive-behavior impact, and readiness for change, and direct licensed staff in developing formulations.
  • Provide direct interventions and supports to Persons Served with substance misuse or addiction regardless of residence.
  • Use trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, person-centered, culturally competent, strengths-based, and skills-training approaches.
  • Provide evidence-based addiction treatment and best practices, including Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Harm Reduction, Relapse Prevention, the Simple Screening Instrument for Substance Abuse, Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment, Seeking Safety, Wellness Recovery Action Plans, Cognitive Behavioral interventions, Safety Plans, Crisis Prevention and Response Plans, and the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
  • Refer Persons Served and coordinate with Care Coordination entities to promote access to Medication Assisted Treatment, Dual Recovery groups, and psychoeducational services addressing substance misuse and related issues.
  • Provide addiction-treatment psychoeducational services individually and in groups.
  • Participate as a member of the intervention team for assigned Persons Served.
  • Train, mentor, and model evidence-based addiction-treatment practices for GLE SIE staff, including Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Harm Reduction, Housing First, Relapse Prevention, and long-term addiction recovery.
  • Perform, train, supervise, mentor, and model evidence-based clinical and recovery-oriented interventions, including Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction and addiction-treatment support, Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment, Seeking Safety, Stages of Change, Wellness Recovery Action Plans, and Cognitive Behavioral interventions.
  • Document Persons Served needs and services thoroughly.
  • Promote engagement, safe housing, community tenure, greater self-sufficiency, and successful service completion.
  • Promote access to healthcare, employment, and education services.
  • Coordinate with Care Coordination entities to ensure access to community-based acute addiction treatment, Medication Assisted Treatment, self-help and peer support, psychoeducational services, and relapse-prevention services.
  • Participate in the Addiction Recovery Counselor Community of Practice Workgroup for licensure and role-specific supervision, competency development, mentoring, and learning.
  • Receive regularly scheduled, role-based clinical supervision from the Assistant Team Leader.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Clinical experience working with people with co-occurring disorders or addictions is preferred.
  • Preference is given to bilingual or bicultural applicants.
  • Preference is given to applicants with lived experience of psychiatric conditions.
  • Knowledge of addiction-treatment principles and modalities, best practices, and evidence-based practices, including Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Harm Reduction, the Simple Screening Instrument for Substance Abuse, Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment, Housing First, Addiction Peer Support Services, Seeking Safety, Wellness Recovery Action Plans, Cognitive Behavioral interventions, acute addiction-treatment practices, and Medication Assisted Treatment.
  • Knowledge of engagement strategies and the ability to build supportive, trusting relationships with Persons Served.
  • Knowledge of risk-management and mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented, person-centered, strengths-based, empowerment, and self-advocacy practices.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally competent services.
  • Knowledge of the cultural, religious, ethnic, disability, and gender issues affecting Persons Served.
  • Knowledge of the human, legal, and civil rights of Persons Served.
  • Knowledge of emergency services and acute-care addiction systems.
  • Knowledge of community-based mental health, healthcare, care coordination, and other services available to Persons Served.
  • Knowledge of the health risks of psychiatric disability and addictions.
  • Ability to formulate treatment plans and train staff to perform substance-misuse and addiction-service interventions.
  • Knowledge of formal and informal substance-misuse and addiction-assessment practices.
  • Knowledge and use of different communication, learning, and supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of participatory and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership to staff on substance-misuse and addiction issues.
