About the job

Requirements
  • A minimum of 6 years of technical program management experience owning platform programs serving multiple engineering teams, with demonstrated ownership of large migrations, automation, or validation initiatives.
  • Technical fluency in several of the following areas: cloud infrastructure, on-premise systems, continuous integration and continuous delivery, distributed systems, embedded software, data platforms, machine learning infrastructure, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, observability, or fleet operations.
  • Experience working on a hardware platform such as robotics, automotive, or aviation.
  • A track record of shipping measurable velocity and reliability improvements with concrete metrics, such as reduced build or test time, service-level objective attainment, or hardware-in-the-loop throughput gains; candidates should be prepared to share baseline-to-result examples during interviews.
  • Strong program control skills, including risk registers, Gantt or timeline ownership, rollout and rollback plans, runbooks, and structured postmortems with tracked remediation items.
  • Ability to make and defend tradeoffs involving performance, cost, and safety, convene technical and operations stakeholders, and drive binding decisions.
  • Comfort with operational intensity, including on-call coordination for launches, occasional off-hours work for field tests or launches, and travel to test or customer sites up to 10%.
  • Ability to work in the South San Francisco office at least 4 days per week.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
  • Own cross-functional programs from strategy through delivery, defining outcomes, milestones, success metrics, dependencies, risks, and decision points.
  • Lead complex migrations, rollouts, and architectural transitions across cloud, on-premise, vehicle, dock, tower, and site environments.
  • Drive improvements in platform reliability, scalability, latency, cost, test throughput, developer feedback loops, deployment success, and operational recovery.
  • Establish shared readiness criteria for launches and migrations, including validation coverage, observability, rollback plans, operational ownership, and safety-critical dependencies.
  • Make cross-functional tradeoffs explicit, balancing safety, reliability, performance, cost, fidelity, delivery speed, and operational complexity.
  • Create operating mechanisms including program reviews, dependency tracking, risk registers, decision logs, executive updates, and measurable health dashboards.
  • Drive incident and postmortem follow-through, ensuring systemic corrective actions are prioritized, owned, measured, and closed.
  • Help teams turn shared platform capabilities into repeatable, self-service workflows for engineers, validators, technicians, and operators.
  • Manage schedules, resourcing, vendor dependencies, and escalation paths for programs with material impact on fleet or business timelines.
  • Scope, plan, and kick off a complex, cross-functional program.
  • Deliver a major program milestone by completing a phased migration or rollout that improves a tracked metric and passes a launch readiness review.
  • Establish program dashboards and service-level objectives for platform health and developer velocity, and identify top-priority areas for improvement.
Desired Qualifications
  • Former software or systems engineering experience is strongly preferred.

About the company

Zipline builds and operates autonomous drone delivery networks for retailers, restaurants and healthcare systems that need to move products without road traffic. Its electric aircraft carry food, prescriptions and other supplies from partner sites or distribution hubs to customers and health facilities. The company combines aircraft, charging equipment and delivery software with flight operations, so partners buy a logistics service rather than manage their own drones. Merchants use its ordering and tracking tools to reach customers, while governments and health systems contract for medical supply delivery. Zipline was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Growth teams have fresh funding: Zipline raised over $600 million in January 2026 to expand delivery operations.
  • Consumer distribution is widening: Zipline announced Uber Eats integration in August 2026, with first deliveries planned later that year.
  • Operations extend beyond pilots: Zipline reported over 2.7 million completed deliveries across four continents in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New Texas scale is pending: Zipline's September 2026 five-metro proposal remains under FAA environmental review.
  • Bulk deliveries face a weight ceiling: Zipline's proposed Texas P2 aircraft have an eight-pound payload limit.
  • Field testing disrupts regular hours: Zipline's Esparto operator posting requires nights, weekends and occasional regional travel.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Its delivery pod steers itself: Zipline lowers an autonomous robot on a tether while the larger aircraft stays overhead.
  • Different docks share capacity: Zipline's P2 aircraft fly between docks and recharge before taking the next delivery.
  • Public health is a core customer: Zipline runs Rwanda's national blood-delivery network alongside its US consumer service.

Zipline secures 8-year Côte d'Ivoire deal to serve 12M people with drone delivery

US drone logistics company Zipline will expand operations in Côte d'Ivoire, building nine additional facilities to complement its existing site operational since 2023. The expansion aims to serve 12 million people, roughly a third of the Ivorian population, over the next eight years. During its three-year pilot programme, Zipline delivered nearly 4 million medical products — primarily vaccines and blood — to more than 200 healthcare centres in a region northwest of Abidjan. The Ivorian government will cover operating costs including pharmacy-grade warehousing, cold chain management, digital tracking, and delivery for eight years. Zipline expects the government to achieve a three-fold return on its investment, though the company declined to disclose the exact financial terms. The deal represents growing African government adoption of drone technology for delivering social services to hard-to-reach areas.
