Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a professional capacity at an animal shelter.
  • Knowledge of shelter medicine and behavior for cats and dogs.
  • Experience managing budgets, performance goals, and metrics.
  • Two to four years of experience providing exceptional service to the public through customer service, volunteer coordination, animal-related programs, or similar work.
  • Experience using statistical information to inform plans, with proven attention to detail and advanced organizational and time-management skills.
  • A customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues, with familiarity and comfort with non-judgmental philosophies.
  • Basic ability to identify and discuss the medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.
  • Strong leadership skills, decisive judgment in difficult and fast-paced situations, conflict-resolution experience, ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, public-speaking, and presentation experience, with the ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ position on issues.
  • Experience supporting, engaging with, and developing relationships with community members, volunteers, and donors.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and familiarity with shelter or animal-management software, or willingness and comfort learning new online information systems.
  • Ability to routinely lift 40 pounds and perform strenuous activities including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods and spend extended periods walking, standing, or sitting.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs of all sizes, temperaments, and medical or behavioral conditions.
  • Availability for varying schedules, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Ability to monitor a designated phone line after hours for urgent foster-care or volunteer-related issues, including animal emergencies and scheduling issues.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight stays, via various forms of transportation.
  • Applicants for employment in the United States must have valid work authorization that does not now or in the future require visa sponsorship.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily functions and growth of lifesaving programs, including adoptions and basic animal care, at program locations.
  • Work alongside team members and volunteers to oversee, coordinate, and conduct daily lifesaving and animal-care activities such as adoptions, feeding, cleaning, walking, and medicating animals housed or transported within Best Friends’ vehicles, buildings, or facilities.
  • Lead teams and volunteers in day-to-day lifesaving program activities, including animal flow and adoption outcomes, while contributing to operational-efficiency, customer-service, and lifesaving strategies.
  • Evaluate onsite animal capacity and determine lifesaving needs for shelter conversions with the Senior Manager and/or Director.
  • Develop and improve program efficiency and customer-service experiences to increase placement opportunities and adoption outcomes.
  • Audit length-of-stay trends in the onsite animal population and work with the foster and care team to expedite placement for long-stay animals.
  • Prepare and manage the department’s operational budget, forecasts, and performance metrics.
  • Participate in maintaining physical facilities and vehicles and advise teams based on comprehensive knowledge of Best Friends’ programs.
  • Create a welcoming and engaging environment, provide customer service to Lifesaving Center visitors, and support constituent-journey development.
  • Match animals with the needs of adopters, fosters, and transfer partners and provide knowledgeable customer service.
  • Provide support, training, and performance feedback; participate in performance conversations; support hiring and onboarding; and ensure teams meet program requirements and procedures.
  • Oversee, support, or assist in creating and editing written, video, and photo content for social media.
  • Collaborate with departments and marketing teams on social-media and public-relations engagement opportunities and represent Best Friends in media relations when requested.
  • Maintain Best Friends’ voice across communications.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop, evolve, and implement efficient processes and participate in operating-procedure development.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and task lists, including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
  • Lead the maintenance of a safe workplace, model safe work practices, and address unsafe practices and conditions with leadership.
  • Travel up to 10% as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a professional capacity at an animal shelter, with a strong preference for experience with adoptions and animal care programming.
  • Fear Free certification is a plus.
  • Three to five years of experience managing teams of people, including staff and volunteers, with a record of program growth in animal shelter operations with a lifesaving focus is highly preferred.
